Milan Tiff makes big comeback in triple jump: 43-7 at 58
Milan Tiff, a former NCAA champion triple jumper from UCLA, has returned to the hop-step-jump wars. Big time. At Sunday’s John Ward Masters Games in Santa Ana, California, Milan, listed as age 60 but actually 58, spanned 43-7 (metrically 13.28). He turns 60 in July 2009 (in time for worlds), where he can target the listed M60 world record of 12.68 (41-7 1/4) by Finland’s Stig Backlund in 2000. I’m awaiting a wind reading on that jump, which age-grades to 18.33 (59-2 3/4)! Milan jumped sparingly last season. He’s no stranger to masters, though. In 1995, he set the M45 indoor WR of 14.82 (48-7 1/2). Welcome back, Milan!
Also at Sunday’s meet, Jai Black of San Diego, who didn’t compete in Boston, ran the 4 in 59.83. The world and American W45 record is 56.82 by Oregon’s legendary Mary Libal at the Buffalo worlds in 1995. Three seconds is a big gap, but Jai clocked 57.83 at Orono and swept the sprints. She also ran the 2 in 26.2 Sunday.
Jai trains with the Kettrell Berry group about five days a week. Jai is easily the best quarter-miler in her age group since Mary Libal.
Last year, according to mastersathletics.net, only five women worldwide broke 60 in Jai’s age group.
Thanks to Andy Hecker, here are other results from Sunday’s meet:
