W70 steeplechase, W75 throw WRs fall at Brit nationals

By just a second, Britain’s Anne Martin lowered her own listed world record in the 2,000-meter steeplechase on Sunday, clocking a superb 10.49.22 at the British Masters Championships in Birmingham. Anne’s previous W70 best was 10:50.35, apparently at the same track. Complete results of the British masters nationals are posted here. Sprinter/photographer Tom Phillips notes: “All the more remarkable when you look at the wind readings on some events. The jumpers had it with them. We trackies had it in our faces throughout.”

Also, Pete Mulholland reports:

And two world marks by W75 Rosemary Chrimes in the shot (8.58/28-1 3/4)) and discus (26.82/88-0) to add to her M70 marks set in these Championships five years ago. As Rosemary Payne, in 1970, Chrimes won gold in the Commonwealth Games discus at Edinburgh in her native Scotland.

The listed W75 world records in the shot and discus are both by Germans: 8.11 (26-7 1/4) by Marianne Hamm in 2003 and 22.44 (73-7 1/2) by Annchen Reile in 1991.

Congratulations to Anne Martin on lowering her WR in the Steeplechase. I had the pleasure of meeting her and competing against her in Clermont-Ferrand – chasing her around the track – watching her back and she is one strong and talented athlete.
Tom Phillips – if you see her please extend my congratulations to Anne for her fine performance – and also to Pam Jones who is not getting any slower either in the W 70 age group. I look forward to competing against them in Lahti next summer.
