New CEO promises to ‘be a huge sponge’ in early miles
Doug Logan is a shiny new car, and the powers that be at USATF have fallen in love with him. That’s understandable. New owners want to feel good about their wheels. Despite a few scratches and dents in his career, CEO Doug, 65, appears to be firing on all cylinders in his media rollout. Check out his teleconference. He also gave off that intoxicating new-car smell in Phil Hersh’s recent profile. Doug told Phil: “In the 1940s and 1950s, track and field was a nice-looking, polished Chevy driving down the highway at 50 miles per hour. It is still a pretty good Chevy driving at 50 mph. The problem is other sports have become Ferraris. By the end of the next two (Olympic) quadrenniums, track and field should at least be a 5 Series BMW.”
OK, enough of the cheesy motor metaphors.
Logan is the new CEO of USATF, and we have to work with him. To his credit, he has promised to reach out.
He said in his teleconference:
In the first 30 to 60 days, I’m going to be a huge sponge. Those of you who know me know I’m a pretty quick study. I’m going to take track on one-on-one and I’ve got some good teachers. I’ve got probably 100 volunteers on my PC screen right now. I will talk to fans, coaches, athletes, officials, members of the press and sponsors — everybody involved in the sport at one level or another.
But that doesn’t mean we should sit on our hands and hope, hope someone will be our advocate. We need to share our concerns with him as well.
So here’s an invitation: Send me your questions for Doug Logan.
I will pick out the best (or all) and convey them on your behalf.
Questions are a good way to teach as well as learn. Through your queries, Doug will learn which issues are the biggest concerns for masters tracksters (and fieldsters).
In a week or so, I’ll collate these into a questionnaire and shoot them off to Doug. No need to give your name. No need to post them on the blog (although it would be nice). Just send them to me via TrackCEO@aol.com, and I’ll do the rest.
In the meantime, here’s our latest insta-poll:
