L.A. Olympian mulls masters comeback: Walter McCoy

Walter McCoy won gold as a member of the 4×4 relay at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics (in the heats and semis, but not the final), and he’s dipped his toe in the masters waters this year. Now 45, Walter ran a 24.90 in the deuce last month in Tallahassee, Florida. With a Florida State best of 44.99, he probably has some more speed in those legs.

Fellow Floridian Jim Broun wrote me:

I ran into Walter McCoy this weekend at the Florida State football game and he told me he was planning to run in Masters meets this coming year! I tried to talk him into becoming a hurdler and he laughed a bit about it. He said he had recently run a 200 meter for time and it encouraged him!

We look forward to seeing Walter on the circuit next year. Maybe he can talk another Florida State Walter into joining the masters ranks in a few years: Walter Dix.

Walter McCoy still has it! I had the opportunity to watch him at the SE SPorts Festival that he was hosting and he decided to run the 200 at the last minute.
From what he told me, he has not really trained and still went 24 in the 200. Just imaging what he would do with some training. I cannot wait to see him on the Masters Circuit.

Walter McCoy and I were club teammates back in the early 80’s. A great guy and a riot to be around. I’d love to see him on the Master’s circuit as well.

Hope to see Walter at some of our meets in 2009. Let’s see, looks like the biggest one will be March 20-22 in Landover, Maryland. The hotels listed are a bit expensive, but prospective entrants can do a lot better by going to Red Roof Inn (Rockville, MD) or certain other sites.
Hmmm…the Landover meet (US Indoor Nationals) looks to be the largest of our meets for 2009 for one simple reason — population. As in real estate, location beats out everything else, and Landover definitely is convenient. It can be reached in less than 5 hours from New York City, Philadelphia (maybe 2 hours and 30 minutes from Philly), Wilmington, Baltimore (about 40 minutes), Harrisburg, Pittsburgh, Alexandria, Richmond, Norfolk, Virginia Beach …need I go on?
The track is flat, but Bill Collins ran well on it, and Bruce McBarnette (M50) has high jumped well there. I look for 990 entrants, which would easily set a new record for the meet.
Outdoors I would recommend the Southeastern Masters in Raleigh, NC, for Walter (should be first weekend in May) as well as the Penn Relays (Philadelphia, last weekend in April). Don’t see anything in Florida to recommend.

Well said Peter! I’m also looking forward to the indoor nationals in Landover. I live less than an hour from the Reggie in Boston, but it will be nice to compete on a different track for a change. I think we all owe the New England Association a big thank you for stepping in the last few years to keep the meet going. Without their dedication to Master’s track, we wouldn’t have had the National Indoor meet in 2006-2008.
I’ve either been injured or had business commitments during early May, but I hope to make it to the Southeastern Masters meet this year. Have heard great things about that meet.
Since I’m over 50, I’ll head to San Francisco for the NSG meet later in the summer.
There are two really good New England meets for anyone near this region. The Dartmoutn Relays Indoor meet in January (full masters T&F program)and the NE USATF Masters Outdoor Championships (usually at Springfield College) in late July. Two very well run meets that cater to the Master’s athlete.

Hello, everyone! I am 50th years old now. I wish I could run the way I run when I was 45. I ran 48 with my team members.
