Jett’s 14.39 over 42-inchers at age 41 gets kudos (at last)

Rod Jett entered the Hornet Invitational last March in Sacramento and became the oldest man to break 14.5 seconds in the 110 hurdles set at 42 inches. His clocking of 14.39 at age 41 went unremarked (by me at least). But Roger Ruth’s latest data dump rectifies that oversight. Rod’s 14.39 over the international highs beats the listed (but unofficial) age-41 record of 15.0 set back in 1975 and tied in 1977. Next up: becoming the oldest to go sub-15 in the 42s. That mark is now held by the legendary Don Finlay of Britain, who was 42 when he clocked a hand-timed 14.8 in 1951. Keep in mind that 14.24 was the M40 world record until relatively recently in the 39-inch hurdles. Stay hot, Rod!

Meanwhile, other issues pop up in Roger’s latest lists.
Did 51-year-old Svein Inge Valvik use a 2KG or a 1.5KG discus when he threw 51.49 meters (168-11) this past season? That’s the question left hanging in Roger’s discus research for masters (35-and-over) on world seasonal open lists.
Roger writes: ā€œBarre Lilloe has written to alert me that my masters discus list, posted yesterday, is missing a mark for Svein Inge Valvik that is shown on Jalava’s world list as # 521 at 51.49. This is an unfortunate mistake, because Valik was nearly 52 years old on the date of the competition and should have replaced Pertti Hynni (48) as the oldest thrower on the 2008 list. The complete entry for Valik would have been: 521 51.49 Svein Inge Valvik NOR 20 Sep 56 Oslo 28 Jun.ā€
Roger continues:

How does this sort of error happen? As I’ve noted, in looking for masters on a list, I sort for all those with birthdays in 1973, which would make them 35 if their birthday is before the date of the meet when the season’s best mark was made. Then I sort for 72 birthdates, 71, 70, etc., until I seem to have exhausted the possibilites. I see that on the men’s discus list I had a hit on 63, none of 62 or 61, a surprise hit on 60, none on 59, 58, or 57, so quit looking at that point–as it turns out, one year too soon. Sorry, but there are lots of lists and I’m not quite half-way through. I’ll try to watch more carefully.
Yesterday, Uri Goldbourt wrote of another kind of error on the men’s
discus list, asking: What does Dheeb from Qatar do on the men’s list if he was born in
1985?
The list showed Dheeb ranked #72 at 61.95m. This time, in sorting for ā€œ72ā€ 1972 birth years, the search turned up Dheeb’s 72 and I failed to note that it was his ranking and not his birth year.
If that seems too many mistakes, you ain’t seen nothin’ yet: I’ve just sampled around the marathon lists a bit and it looks like about a fourth of the athletes shown have masters-age birthdates. I just think maybe I’ll save that for last, hit ā€œsendā€ and go chanterelle hunting for a week before I check my in-mail.

I also note that Roger listed three hurdlers whose times were made over 39-inch barriers (but listed among the 42-inchers.) I note them below.

Congratulations Rod! I’m sure we’ll see many more outstanding races from you in 2009.

  2. kellydidier - October 18, 2008

i dont know if this counts as a consideration dave ashford and roger kingdom ashford 40 years ran 13.96m0ver the 42 inch hurdles and was provisional for the olympic trails,as well kingdom in 2000. also does dave ashford still have the best hurdle time ever in the 110 hurdles 13.73 ,i love masters track and im still learning about masters top time the 13.73 is my opinion is really awesome considering he must have been a least 40 years of age. but i think rod has run fast but compare the two and 40 and 13,73 i s still the best ever.

  3. Liz Palmer - October 18, 2008

David, I’m sure you know exactly how old you were, and yes 13.73 is still the best ever for the M40 race.

  4. Rod Jett - October 18, 2008

Dave and I are friends and we all 13.73 is the standard. Who are you Kelly, Dave’s publicist? I don’t think he needs one. As for what happened to me at the end I had an achilles injury that kept me out from April through early July. I tried to run at Nationals but was not 100%. But don’t worry Kelly, I’ll be back next year if for no other reason than to SHUT YOUR MOUTH, figuratively of course. BTW try using the shift key once in a while.

  5. Mark Cleary - October 18, 2008

I’m pretty sure David was 41 at the 2003 World Champs when he ran the 13.73

  6. Liz Palmer - October 18, 2008

Mark, David was born in 1963 so it appears that he was 40 when he set his M40 WR. That record is incredibly impressive but we aren’t comparing the same race. David ran it in the WMA meet so it was over masters 39 inch barriers. Rod ran in an open race over 42 inch barriers which makes him the oldest man at age 41 to run sub 14.5 in an open, not masters race. I am wondering why these comparisons are being brought up since we are not talking about the same races for the two men. There’s no question that both of them are outstanding talents.

  7. Don Drummond - October 20, 2008

Congrats Rod! That is a phenominal time over the 42″ Barriers and we all know that you were hurt at Nationals, so there is no reason for you to explain.
Look forward to running some fast times with you in 2009.
    Don Drummond

Boy – you have to love the passion of the high hurdling crew! As for my two cents, I believe ALL track fans should keep their eyes on the men’s 40-44 HH this year. With Don moving up with his impressive records and stats, hopes that Jett & myself running injury free, it should be very interesting, to say the least (All are past National Master’s Champions).
I know Don will be going after Dave’s impressive world-record and he’s the front runner. But, I’ve said this since he turned 40, I also believe if Jett stay’s healthy, he has a fantastic chance, too! Also, if Dave, Rod & Don are up to it, I think we should travel at a relay meet and crush the 110HH relay record (40-49). What do you guys think?
Keep up the training & stay healthy!

I am down Richard for crushing that 110HH Relay Record. Just tell me where and when and I am there. What everyone has to understand is when it is your ERA you have to welcome the competition, because it is difficult to do it by yourself. We are in an ERA where hurdling is at its best for Masters Track and we can all make HISTORY. The competition is only on the track and our generation of hurdlers are all FAMILY. Let’s take advantage of our ERA and add some names to the History books.
