Masters Athlete blogger seeks 50-plus athletes for interviews
Don McGrath writes at Masters Athlete magazine: “I’m a lifelong athlete who is turning 46 years old this year, and still very passionate about my sport. I am looking around the bend to my fifties and beyond and thinking about how I can continue to enjoy this important part of my life. I have embarked on a project to interview at least 50 athletes over 50 years old towards the goals of understanding the challenges facing older athletes, understanding successful strategies employed by them, and compiling their stories such that we can gain inspiration to look down the road with excitement and anticipation.” If you are interested in taking part, write Don at don@50interviews.com. Masters Athlete magazine again offers free subscriptions
Sean Callahan, my Chicago friend who runs Masters Athlete magazine, informs me that free subscriptions are being offered — again. When the magazine was founded (as GeezerJock) back in May 2004, it created buzz and circulation with free “charter” subs. Now that the founders have bought the magazine back from Turnstile Publications, they’re returning to the free route to bump up their numbers. Here’s the official announcement: “Sign up for a free year’s subscription to Masters Athlete magazine at www.masters-athlete.com”

I did the free subscription deal but it sure seems like I’ll get a bunch of junk mail as a result..

I am probably one of the youngest subscribers to the magazine, but I think it is awesome. I really don’t think I have gotten any junk mail as a result of having a subscription.

Masters Athlete magazine flourishes after being ‘folded’
The September issue of Masters Athlete magazine (formerly GeezerJock) is the biggest money-maker ever, I’m told by founding editor Sean Callahan. That’s thanks to the staff’s own efforts, and not the company that owned it, however. A year ago, Turnstile Publications acquired GeezerJock and renamed it Masters Athlete. Then in late May, it sold Masters Athlete back to its original owners, based in Chicago. An erroneous report said the magazine had been folded. “GeezerJock Media LLC is the official owner of Masters Athlete,” Sean tells me. “Our coverage is going to continue to get better, and we plan to add e-newsletters next year. We like Masters Athlete (as a title) and so do our readers and advertisers.” Moreover, its Web site is logging 30,000 unique users a month — pretty darn good traffic.

Is there a magazine similar to the old GeezerJock mag which i used to enjoy and for some reason lost the subscription. I still have old copies which I found while reorganizing my home office.

Masters Athlete magazine posts free weight-training issue
Masters Athlete magazine (formerly GeezerJock) is expanding into weight training with a separate title called Masters Strength & Fitness. The first issue is free and downloadable here. Even though it has a weight-lifter on the cover, it’s not just for big husky guys who do Olympic or power lifts in dark, stinky gyms. The first issue even mentions the special needs of women. The magazine cites track and field among sports that can benefit from weight training.

We need more information about weight training for older athletes. We are a unique group and most of the studies on weight training for the elderly don’t apply. Guys like Bob Ward, Carl Wallen, Larry Pratt, and Jay Silvester are not ready for the nursing home.
Carl Wallen (Dartmouth coach), who could military press 400 pounds when he was young, has kept a training diary since high school (He is close to 100 years old now). There are many masters athletes with similar training records who could shed light on this issue. -

Weight training is vital! No matter what your sport or event, strength work can help enhance your performance. I’ve been lifting regularly and consistently for about two and a half years with excellent results.

Masters Athlete to add calendars, results and track blog
Masters Athlete, the magazine and Web site formerly known as GeezerJock, is starting a rotation of bloggers. And I’m in it. Editor Sean Callahan invited me to write once a week on any subject that strikes my fancy. I start this coming Tuesday. Sean details this and other ambitious additions to the site in this announcement. He also writes: “We’ll be adding more bloggers in the future. If you’re interested in blogging for masters-athlete.com, email a description of what you’d like to cover and a writing sample to: scallahan@masters-athlete.com.”

Hi Ken
Remember me ?! You encouraged me to become a blogger for masters in S.A.
which I have not gotten around to yet (one of my new year’s resolutions !)
I have this passion for masters athletics and feel we can grow and promote ourselves more than we have to up to now. I would like to get more people involved and committed and realise that blogging is the way to go. Daily I meet people who have never heard of masters – and they are amazed that we don’t promote ourselves. Our national committee is looking to appoint a PRO, so I would like to know what are the best attributes for this position? Looking forward to becoming a blogger and not just an observer !

Hi, Pam
Of course I remember you — half of another world-class masters couple. How’s Stan?
You’ve been blogging for years and didn’t even know it:

Blogging is just writing on the Web. But it’s faster and easier than newsletter publishing. No printing and mailing.
You can set up a free blog anywhere with blogger software:
https://www.blogger.com/start
The secret to blogging is the same as track: consistency. Write something every day, and readers will come. Stay focused on all aspects of South African masters athletics, and you’ll soon have a dedicated readership. This is a great way of getting people enthused and involved in the sport.
Best of luck! -

Masters athletes of the year — minus one
Phil Byrne, who heads the USATF Masters T&F Awards Committee, on Thursday night announced the results of a three-hour meeting Wednesday that chose top male and female athletes in all age groups, both track and field. But he uttered an embarrassed “Oops!” upon realizing that one of the group’s selections — for Single Best Male Performance of the Year — had been wind-aided. He vowed to go back to the drawing board and come up with possibly a new honoree by Saturday morning, when all USATF awards were to be officially unveiled at the Portland Hilton.
