Southern California wildfires displace many masters

With evacuation orders coming almost hourly, many masters friends of ours are subject to mandatory get-out-of-theres in several SoCal counties, notably San Diego, where 300,000 residents have grabbed stuff and skedaddled. If you know the status of any local masters athletes, please post a note here. Earlier this afternoon, my family went shopping at the La Mesa Wal-Mart and Costco and dropped off blankets, dog water dishes, party trays of sandwiches, drinks and snacks at Qualcomm Stadium. The saddest sight: While inching toward the drop-off point for donations, we saw the driver of a red pickup truck with Texas plates nonchalantly drop a cigarette butt out the window. For the best coverage of the San Diego fires, see SignOnSanDiego.com. This disaster has only just begun.

I exchanged emails with Eric Dixon last night. He said “… we have one/two (fires) here in Orange County. I live on top of the hill with a view (south side of the valley). Lake Forrest (fire) is about 5 miles from me (east side) and the San Diego fire is about 10 miles (north side). I can see the fires (through the smoke) on the other side of the mountains/valley. It?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s getting harder to breathe too. Also, as I?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢m typing this, the Santa Ana winds are starting to pick up again too. This is not good! Last night the winds were slamming the house and woke me up 4 times. The deck I put up last year had to be designed to take wind shears of 90-120 mph. The wind blew out one of the panels last night, which is helping the fires spread and jump over the mountains.”
Maryline Roux emailed me earlier today to say that she had talked to Eric this morning. He was okay and on his way to work at that time.

    Hi, Ken.
I’m glad the know that you and your family are okay. Being from Texas myself, it saddens me to read about that idiot with the Texas plates who dropped that lit cig. I’m glad he left Texas, but it’s too bad he had to go to California. Stay safe, buddy. My thoughts and prayers are with you and yours.

    Dear all,
It is 7.15 p.m Eastern time, I’ve just talked to Eric Dixon. He’s still at work and doesn’t really know how much the fire has progressed toward his house. He has a positive attitude and I found him in good spirit. He will update me tonight via e-mail. So I’ll keep you posted tomorrow morning.
Sending you all my energy and support. We will be praying for you all.
Let us know how we can help, beside posting messages.
    Hugs . . .
    Maryline Roux

I misquoted Eric earlier. It should have read the Santiago fire. Sorry. He’s still seeing flames on the nearby mountain.
Take care everyone in Southern California.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to those impacted by the Malibu, San Diego, and several other fires that hit the past week in the “Southern Calif.” area.
As Ken mentioned many were evacuated from their homes.
I was told by one person that there is a website that lists the status of many homes that are at risk of fire damage.
As of Oct. 24 evening most of the fires were still not contained enough.

This weekend there is supposed to be an Aztec invitational cross country run at mission bay park, is that still happening?

Paul, you probably know this, but the Aztecs XC meet will be in New Mexico:
