4 WRs in 4×200 relays at Budapest; Germans led with 7 golds

W50 gold medalists for USA: Shemayne Williams, Lorraine Jasper, Debra Hoffman and Joy Upshaw.

Munich is about 350 miles from Budapest, so it’s no wonder the Germans were well-represented at worlds (aka Earth’s Biggest Indoor All-Comers Meet). Their roster was about four times the size of Team USA. But give the Germans credit for showing up, especially on Sunday β€” relay day. Only the 4Γ—200 was contested. (Easier to manage with each runner doing a lap.) Germany won seven relay golds, followed by Great Britain-Northern Ireland’s six and America’s two (M60 with Bill Collins and W50 with Joy Upshaw). Guido MΓΌller anchored the M75 German team to one of four world relay records set at the SYMA Sport and Event Center, a 2:00.58 to beat the listed WR of 2:03.45 by an American team anchored by Bob Lida in 2012. The Germans added a WR in the W65 race, clocking 2:05.79 to beat the listed WR of 2:13.38 by another German team at 2004 Sindelfingen worlds. The United Kingdom produced the other WRs β€” in W60 (2:05.79) and M55 (1:40.58), beating listed marks of 2:10.44 and 1:41.47 (both by the Brits).

Budapest worlds, held in these walls, may have been best WMA indoor meet.

Another way of looking at the relays: Germany and UK combined to win 13 titles. Only 18 golds were awarded. Other champions were Finland, France and Sweden.

Here are complete relays results:

BTW, did anyone get Guido’s split in the 4×2? Or that of the American teams, especially Bill Collins and Joy Upshaw?

It needs to go on record that WMA made the biggest mess imaginable of the medal presentations for these relays. And from what I hear, it was a WMA decision, not the LOC’s.

The stadium atmosphere had been really great during the races. Events ran to time, and there was a large and enthusiastic crowd. Presentations were scheduled and well-publicized. At the last moment, these were changed, with totally inadequate announcements, mostly in a language few present could understand, and even fewer could hear. It was announced that all bronze medals would be awarded in one ceremony, followed by all, silvers, then all golds. Then, for half an hour absolutely nothing happened.

Athletes were all waiting, there were few audible PA updates. Most of the crowd left the arena. Then a few bronze medals were handed out, followed by a few golds, and eventually some silvers. The whole scene was far more embarrassing than Sacramento in 2011 when the LOC “ran out of medals”. I spoke with two ladies from the LOC who were in tears at the presentation farce. One said to me “After all of our work, this is what the athletes will remember”. She may be correct.

If they had handed out medals at random, it would actually have made more sense! Once again, WMA showed its huge capacity to clutch defeat from the jaws of victory. Presentations are important. They give approbation and closure. WMA has clearly learned little about this since, say, Riccione in 2007, when many relay medal presentations were simply canceled because they were scheduled at the same time that WMA officials were due to have lunch.

Joy Upshaw ran 26.1 for 200 in relay, I’m told. Incredible.

Congratulations to our M60 4x 200 & W50 4x 200. I know of the sacrifice and hard work that these athletes made to represent our country. I’m especially proud of Shermaine Williams winnig her first world championship. There’s nothing else to say about Thad, Charles, Rick and Bill except new day,
    sos (same old stuff )

I’m proud of you guys and gals.

sorry they messed up the relay medal presentations – they are often a mess as so many races and teams and a short period of time in which to get the ceremony done. I was not there and did not see what happened but I have not so fond memories of botched medal awards in other WMA meets – in Kamloops – doing it at a far away outside building and with no audience because no one wanted to go and miss the action on the track – and then doing the relays in the middle of the track but not announcing ahead of time so that many were left wondering what had happened. For some the relay medal is the only one they receive and it can be a very very big deal. WMA needs to let the LOC take charge unless they have shown clearly that they are not capable of doing it. But….busy fingers like to stick them into the toffee – and make a mess it seems. Yes Riccione was a bit of a mess – but so was San Sebastian where the awardees were sent down under the stands into a very dark room where they could see nothing and left there for hours so it seemed while events were going on. The relay medal awards in San Sebastian were so bad that some just left – and since team awards were not made until all of the team was present ….. And who can forget the botched medal awards in Durban, SA – for the x-c races, well never mind – wait for my book – which will be all about botched awards and lap counting messes at Masters Track meets around the world! (for those reading this who have not sense of humor – I am joking about the book) These are complex meets with many moving parts – that most of the WMA meets are pretty well run is something to be celebrated. And hopefully age will help with eliminating the not so fond memories and retaining the good ones.
I am sorry to have missed Budapest – it sounds like it was a great meet, great facilities, and well run. Congratulations to alal who went and competed or spectated.

Mary, such a shame you were joking about the book.

  7. Anthony Treacher - April 3, 2014

Yes Tom. But no matter. Maybe I will write a book.

  8. Mark Cleary - April 5, 2014

The meet was great and Budapest is my favorite city out of the 7 I have been to for WMA Championships.
