No fear, W35 Marilyn Coleman is here: sets 2 American records
Jerry “Throws Guy” Bookin-Weiner shares news of two American records set Saturday and Sunday at the USATF East Region Masters Championships at Howard Community College in Columbia, Maryland. He writes: “There were 177 athletes entered, the total held down by competition from the New England Association Championships unfortunately held in the Boston area the same weekend. We had two American records set by Marilyn Coleman (W39 thrower from the Shore AC in New Jersey). One of them, in the 20-pound weight throw, exceeded the current record of 14.71 meters (48-3 1/4) by just one centimeter. The other, in the 35-pound superweight throw, shattered the mark she set the previous weekend at the East Region Ultraweight Pentathlon Championships in Chelmsford, MA. Her mark Saturday was 9.32 (30-7), eclipsing her mark in Chelmsford by 48 centimeters. She said on Saturday that before Chelmsford she had been ‘afraid’ of the superweight, but that is no longer the case!”
Jerry graciously continues:
“Both sets of record applications were sent in already and those records should be ratified in December at the convention. Both, of course, may fall again before the end of the season, particularly considering that she threw the 20-pound ball over 15.35 (50-4 1/2) at the World Indoor Championships in Budapest this past winter.”
Congrats to Marilyn! Here are complete results from East Regionals.
And nice efforts by Hall of Famer Larry Colbert in the M75 sprints: 15.50 in the 100 and 33.29 in the 200. M60 superstar Oscar Peyton ran 12.23 and 24.77.
And it’s great to see Neni Lewis competing strongly after recent injuries and March 2012 surgery:

Turns out Marilyn’s chances to improve on her marks last weekend will end at the outdoor nationals. On July 21 she moves up to W40 (when she starts to encounter Neni Lewis’s masters records.
Speaking of Neni, I don’t think she was all that thrilled with her marks in Columbia, but she had fallen down a flight of stairs a few days before and was probably throwing with a broken toe!! The woman is indomitable. After her 2012 surgery her doctor told her not to throw again because if something goes wrong she could wind up paralyzed from the neck down (there’s all kinds of hardware keeping her head on her shoulders at this point and on Saturday I heard her mention something about a loose screw in there – gotta ask about that in Winston Salem).
