Official results are here. Dick Richards wrote about his heartbreaking .04 loss to Hans Bloechlinger: “I ran my best race of this season. I should have dived at the finish. Winner was a very pleasant Swiss man who appreciated my Swiss heritage. Looking forward to the 200 Meter Monday and Long Jump on the 12th.” That’s the spirit, Dick! Keep looking ahead.

Too bad the negative wind readings contributed to the slower times some may have wanted.

Congratulations to all. Allan called me after the final, most people would have called it a year after back and knee surgery, but not Allan. In only about 4 weeks of training he put together 3 Championships
Gold medal performances. What an amazing Athlete and a Great Man.
How about a little love for the throwers and jumpers (other than the mention above about Rita Hanscom’s gold in the W60 high jump)? After all, the sport is track AND field!
Here are the highlights:
M60 John Goldhammer has won gold in both the weight throw and hammer throw. John was last year’s Tom Gage Award winner as Thrower of the Year in the US.
In the W80 high jump, Christel Donley and Flo Meiler went gold, silver!
Other golds:
W40 Weight Throw – Elizabeth Teague
W55 Weight Throw – Carol Finsrud
W60 Javelin Throw – Linda Cohn
W70 Javelin Throw – Carol Frost
In addition, Kathy Bergen won silver in the W75 high jump, George Mathews bronze in the M70 weight throw,and Christel Donley also won bronze in the W80 javelin throw.
That’s a total of 12 medals in the field by the Yanks – eight golds, two silvers, and two bronzes in two days of competition. Well done throwers and jumpers!

I would have loved to have photographed some field events yesterday and have supplied the photos to Ken, but it’s very time-consuming to move among 4 stadia to shoot. There were no field events at the Balmont Stadium yesterday where I shot the 100. I hope to shoot more field events next week. It’s a non-competition day today (Saturday).
I agree with Rob. It is just as difficult to drive between venues. I hope to spend at least a day next week shooting field events at a venue where, ahem, they are putting on almost no track events that day. The whole Lyon schedule is eccentric, to say the least. I’ve been hearing how local politicians have had a big input to what happens where.
Probably a few bronze medals as well, gold maybe king and silver is queen, and bronze – who cares? I know the results are hard to find unless one is at the stadium where the event takes place, difficult for those of us here but maybe some one can find the race walk results. XC is over and USA got a handful of medals there too.
