Ill-fated M55 100 final posted on YouTube, shows close finish

Bill Collins was edged in the last few yards of his 100-meter duel with Oscar Peyton, according to this YouTube video. Oscar’s 11.50 was wiped from the results, however, as detailed in this earlier post.  John Simpson’s 11.04 victory in the M40 100 also is shown here. Keep your eyes peeled for other uploads from nationals. (And thanks to Oshkosh resident Sleepy7 for the videos!) Meanwhile, USATF bonked. It chose a kid competing in IAAF Youth Worlds for Athlete of the Week, failing to honor any of a dozen WR setters at masters nationals as has been the practice in years past. Oh well. Too many greats to choose from, I guess.

Lane 8 & 9 should never have been allowed to run in the finals. They were both given red cards after two false starts each. Payton, in lane 9, would not leave the track and when lane 8 received his red card Oscar told him to run it under protest too.

I am not sure it was okay for Oscar to run under protest. I guess this was an official call or no call. Bill was nursing his injury, Oscar running under protest. Well, it still proved to be an exciting race. Bill would probably gain a tenth or two when healthy if he would jus run through the finish line…

    Ken,
While I agree with alot of what you write, I very much disagree with your post above.
To say USATF made a mistake by chosing “A Kid” as Athlete Of The Week and not follow up with what “The Kid” did was a mistake.
Here is the info taken from the USATF Release..
INDIANAPOLIS – Ryan Crouser of Damascus, Ore., has been named USA Track & Field’s Athlete of the Week after winning two medals and setting a meet record at the recently completed IAAF World Youth Track & Field Championships in Bressanone, Italy.Crouser, who started off the boys shot put final with a foul on Saturday, launched a competition-leading 20.52 meters/67 feet 4 inches on his second throw, and continued to extend his lead on throws three (20.55m/67-5.25), four (21.05m/69-0.75) and five. It was on his fifth throw of the competition, with a monster heave of 21.56m/70-9, that Crouser broke the World Youth Championships record and secured the gold medal.
Crouser also brought home Team USA’s first medal of the competition in winning the silver in the boys discus on Wednesday night. Crouser took the lead with his first throw in the final of 61.58 meters/202 feet. In the fifth round he was overtaken by Hamid Manssour (SYR) who eventually won the competition with a toss of 64.20m/210-7. Crouser was the runner-up with his fifth throw of 61.64m/202-2.
I would say that a 70 ft Gold Medal record breaking performance after a 202 ft Silver Medal performance on the World Stage is a pretty great feat for “A Kid”.
Ok, I’m a thrower so maybe a bit bias but I thought the USATF did not make a mistake in their decision….Not to take away from the great performances at the Nationals by some fantastic athletes! I hope I can keep competing as long as they have………Just didn’t want to take away from a truely great performance.

No way USATF bonked on picking Crouser. Maybe you can argue that they should give athlete of the weeks in each category(Youth, Open, Masters), but to knock them for selecting him over masters athletes is wrong. Not taking anything away from all the amazing performances in Oshkosh, but I would much rather see the “future” of our sport recognized.

Maybe they should have separate categories for Youth, Open, and Masters athletes. How about Renee Henderson winning 3 gold medals in the National Masters Outdoor women’s sprints (100M, 200M, & 400M) for the W40-44. That is a great feat and deserves some recognition.

Ryan Crouser’s broke the championship record. He will undoubtedly be one of our future Olympians. Without taking anything away from the exceptional performances at Oshkosh, Crouser deserved the honor.

    Tanx John,
I love living in Oshkosh, specially the weather and the college girls.

  9. john simpson - July 16, 2009

I saw some of those college girls where there..not as impressive at the ones in my great Lone Star State of Texas……

    when I was there….sorry..

When I come to Texas (someday) I want to see the Alamo. I heard Davey Crocketts horse is stuffed and standing inside the lobby, and that you can sit on him and get your picture made with a cardboard cutout of Pancho Villa standing beside the horse, and Villa is tied up in ropes and walking beside you (in the pic).
Nobody in Wisconsin would even believe a pic like that, but I still want one.
By the way, you are pretty fast, I remember you from when I filmed the races.

You can also see where Ozzy Osborne urniated on the side of the Alamo…make sure you take your camera…hide it though if walking around the riverwalk….evidently some residents are still mad about the results at the Alamo..

I forgot to mention..if you end up moving to Texas don’t forget to opt for the mineral rights to your land…..most Texans have a working high-yeild oil well on their property..

I fully support local Oregonian Ryan Crouser as the choice for Athlete of the Week and I actually think it was a no-brainer as he WON the IAAF youth worlds. Him and his cousin (Sam Crouser in the jav) will be hot recruits the next couple years.
    Congrats Ryan!

Also was a week where Tyson Gay had the American Record in the 100…so I applaud USATF for taking Crouser over TG.

    Howdy! sleepy 7

  17. Sleepy7 - July 17, 2009

Puede la nación de Panamá seguir siendo de largo grande y hermosa.

  18. simpson - July 18, 2009

    Sleepy7..
does that translate to: “my wife is a very good cook and she doesn’t look like Sonia Sotomayor?

  19. Anonymous - July 18, 2009

    clever

  20. Sleepy7 - July 19, 2009

Nope. It means (roughly) ‘May the nation of Panama have a long life and remain beautiful.’
Which necessarily means that poor Justice Sotomayor will not be allowed a visa.
But that’s mean isn’t it? Good thing her older Justice colleagues eyesight is failing, but braille wouldn’t be much more pleasant.
