USATF posts photo galleries from Oshkosh masters nationals

Check out this day-by-day photo gallery from Oshkosh. The 450-plus pictures cover a gamut of events. USATF sent a young staffer from Indy, former Ball State high jumper Kristina Hervey, to capture these images, which are pretty good (but not quite as fine as the ones wife Chris and I shot at nationals). Our photos will be posted shortly after we get home from Milwaukee, where we’re visiting a dozen relatives — most of them current or retired Milwaukee police officers or detectives (keyword: Dubis). Over at YLFOR, Pete Magill did a magnificent job summarizing the running events. (See Pete’s writeup.) Also, USATF has put out a press release on Lahti worlds. Hometown roster has been promised, but I haven’t seen it yet. Finally, Jeff Brower has posted selected Oshkosh videos on his Waterloo Track Club movie page. One shows the M50 shuttle hurdle relay. Some splits: W70-79 Becky Sisley  17.2. M60-69  Ozzie Binion 17.1. M50-59  Jeff Brower 14.9 and Eugene Anton 15.3. Marks were hand-timed and wind-aided.

The women seem to be getting no video time. Nothing at Jeff’s page, nothing on youtube and what happened to Flotrack at the meet?

  2. Ken Stone - July 18, 2009

Derek Lau of AideMMedia had a video crew above the press box at Titan Stadium, taping all track events and some field events (upon request). But unlike Flotrack, which wasn’t present, Derek’s team probably isn’t going to post these videos online.
    His site is http://www.aidemsolutions.com/
Some athletes at Oshkosh were paying (eagerly, it seems) more than $200 for a DVD of their events. Derek apparently was taping the meet for the commercial value, not as a service to USATF.
I passed by Derek’s booth at the stadium and asked him about Flotrack. He said he had been to the site but had no idea whether Flotrack would be involved in taping the meet — as it had at Eugene open nationals.
In 2007, Wasserman Media Group taped and posted just about all running events of Orono masters nationals. That was a one-time-only gig, basically on spec. Wasserman’s deal with USATF died on the vine.

    $200 for the DVD?!?!?! That’s a crime…

  4. Jeff Brower - July 18, 2009

Cheryl, do you need some help filming, transferring, editing and posting some videos of women?

  5. Anonymous - July 18, 2009

    I paid $20.00 not $200.00

  6. Ken Stone - July 18, 2009

I heard a charge of $275 for one athlete. Maybe it was for multiple DVDs.

  7. Robert Thomas - July 18, 2009

Ken why didnt you confirm what the athlete got before speaking of 275.00 dollars for a DVD. I was told that it was 22.00 dollars to get all the rounds of any one event. If you wanted specific races of yourself it would be a little more, but I didnt ask what that was because I wasn’t interested in a DVD. It’s amazing how you always find a way to criticize everything everyone else tries to do. If USATF didn’t send someone from the national office you would complain about that, but they send someone and you complain about the quality of her shots. In years past I don’t remember someone always being there from the National office. I’m always grateful for anything that anyone does for the Masters community. There is always a way to find something positive out of our experience unlike you who seem to look for the negatives. You could always get your association to bid on a National Championship and show the rest of the country how it’s done. Until you are involved with putting on a National meet, I think it’s unfair that you criticize others efforts.

I always need help Jeff. But kidding aside, I was hoping to get a video of the steeplechase for coaching purposes. I looked at the videos by Derek and bought the 400 ($20) but I was not seen at all in the steeple. I guess in their attempt to get everyone in the video I was missed completely. So if anyone taped the women’s steeple and I can be spotted please let me know. Ken does have some great still shots so I am sure we can’t all wait till they are posted.

I was told that they were $22 per DVD.
Peter Taylor (general announcer and announcer for track events; Jerry Howard handled the field events, including throws, in beautiful fashion).

Regarding the three shuttle hurdle races in 2009 . . .
the M50-59 video is already on-line at Jeff Brower’s site. I have someone coverting the three races by a different photographer . . . when the conversion is complete they will be on-line at:
    http://www.woodhurdles.com/ShuttleHurdleRelay/1.html
The shuttle hurdle relays were automatic timing.
The splits are hand time. The anchor legs were
    wind aided.

There were no picuters of the women 65 and under in the throws. I think several American records where set. The competition in the women 50-54 was something to see. Less than 1′ difference between 1st place -4th place. Maybe one day someone will think about the World class women throwers and take some picutes at the National meets.

  12. Cheryl - July 18, 2009

This was the first meet I was at where the announcer (Pete) would do a cut away to the throwers and we would get a update. I thought it was cool.

  13. Tony - July 19, 2009

There is a great video of Oshkosh photos (with music!) up on YouTube. It goes from younger to older competitors. Pretty inspirational. Check it out by searching YouTube with the words “faster higher farther older”

    FYI: HJ DVD was $40.

USATF posts photo gallery of masters at cross nationals

Victah Sailer, one of the best track/running photographers in the world, shot the USATF cross country nationals a week ago in Maryland. Check out this gallery of masters men and women. Names of the runners can be revealed by clicking on caption below right of the images. I’m curious if the Marc Bloom shown running is the same Marc Bloom who writes for The New York Times and many other running sites/publications. Probably is.
