No deluge of Daegu entries? Sign-up deadline extended a week

In a sign that entries aren’t flooding in, Daegu has pushed back its entry deadline for WMA indoor worlds by eight days — to Thursday, Feb. 2, 2017. Not a shock. Happens all of the time. So why don’t they just pick a drop-dead deadline to begin with, and not play this game? In any case, I take offense to this edict: “Qualification: men and women who were born on or before 19 March 1982 and who are physically fit.” So now we’re discriminating against athletes (like me) who aren’t physically fit? They should take the tack of the Senior Olympics: Join us from the rocking chair! If your competition plays a part in your decision to enter Daegu, here’s the list of entrants.

Ken, based on my cursory review, I would push the entry deadline back about a month. I looked at the 60 dash for W35 and found 52 entrants, which is not too bad. Further investigation, however, revealed that only 10 of these 52 women were from outside of Korea.

In addition, Ken, I found that of the 42 Korean women, only 3 had submitted a time; the rest were NT (no time). Of the 3 who had submitted a time, 2 must not be sprinters, as their times were 18.00 and 15.00, respectively. As you know from your math class, Ken, a time of 18.00 in the 60 is a mile pace of 8 minutes, 2.8 seconds.

How many entries for the USATF Masters indoors?
    Deadline 1/26

  3. tb - January 25, 2017

602 people going to ABQ. About 15 more have signed up during the late period.

3667 going to Daegu. Appalling as it may seem, 2200 of them are Korean.

  4. bj425 - January 25, 2017

Wow, that seems like a very low number for Albuquerque. Only 600? Or is that average for an indoor national meet? Does anyone know?

  5. Peter L. Taylor - January 26, 2017

The turnout is highly dependent on the location, not the facility. Landover, Maryland, got over 1000 in 2013, and it has a flat track (with acceptable spaces for the throws and jumps). It crushes other meets in part because of the “300-mile rule.”

Just think about the tens of millions of people who live within 300 miles of Landover, including men and women who reside in New York City, New Jersey, much of Pennsylvania, all of Delaware and Maryland, much of Virginia, a chunk of North Carolina, etc.

After Landover (twice) we have Boston. Albuquerque, even with its fast track, suffers because the great majority of entrants have to fly in. Just how many people does New Mexico have anyway? If Albuquerque ends up with under 650, however, it will be truly disappointing.

As far as Daegu, if only about 1467 non-Koreans are going, that is beyond appalling.

Just to add that the deadline for the World Masters Games in New Zealand was extended to 3 March, i.e. with more than a month:

    M 65, 60 m, Jongoua Kim, Korea, 7.52 = World Record

Is this on track with the 38-under-par 34 round of golf reportedly fired by the late North Korean despot Kim Jong Il? Or is Jongoua Kim the reincarnation of Kim Jong Il? Or is it real and I have to eat dog?

  8. Michael D Walker - January 26, 2017

Peter [#5] is correct, location is important to meet attendance. I would like to attend the nationals more often but flying has gotten pretty expensive so I drive to most meets. I checked and the population of New Mexico is about 2.1 million unlike Daegu where that many people may live within walking distance.

  9. Brian Magerkurth - January 27, 2017

You are correct, Stephan! That is a delicacy! Enjoy! Ha ha

  10. Peter L. Taylor - January 27, 2017

Well, with the entry deadline for Daegu extended into February, our thoughts turn to Albuquerque. Anyone know what the final, final number of entrants is for that meet?

  11. Tom Sputo - January 27, 2017

Regarding Albuquerque … besides the travel problems, I wonder if the altitude is something that keeps at least some people away. In my case, I’m a real lowlander and I cannot travel to Albuquerque or Denver without suffering from altitude sickness (nausea, vomiting, headache, breathing difficulties) unless I take Diamox, which makes it bearable. Then there would be the issue of whether the Diamox, which is a diuretic and works for altitude sickness by increasing the rate of breathing, would be considered to be a performance enhancer in this instance. I can’t be the only one out there with this excuse for staying away.

  12. Rob Jerome - January 27, 2017

Tom, I just checked the WADA banned substance list, and yes, Diamox (also known as acetazolamide) is banned because as a diuretic, it can be used as a masking agent.

Too bad, because I heard others complain of altitude sickness in Albuquerque last year also.

  13. Tom Sputo - January 27, 2017

Jerome (12) diuretics can be granted a TUE, particularly when used for proven hypertension. I’m not sure how USADA would look at this particular one used for altitude sickness.

  14. Peter L. Taylor - January 27, 2017

This just in: Albuquerque has 1560 event entries. If there are 2.3 events per entrant, that means we have 678 people who entered the meet, down from about 1020 or so at Landover in 2013.

If someone has the exact number or a way to estimate the actual number of people who entered other than dividing by 2.3, please respond.

  15. The Dude - January 27, 2017

Pete, I came up with the same 1560 event entries but 625 unique names. Events per entrant is a hair under 2.5.

  16. The Dude - January 27, 2017

    correction: 624 unique names…

  17. Peter L. Taylor - January 27, 2017

Thanks. Using 2.3 per entrant used to work, but perhaps I see why it doesn’t work with a small turnout. In brief, a lot of people who were going to enter only one event did not enter ABQ, while, conversely, those who did enter were people who, on average, enter more events than we see when we have a regular or large turnout. Of course, that is all speculation.

I got out my calculator and found that our entrants this year entered, on average, 2.496 events. I will keep this in mind for future meets with very small turnouts. Conversely, when we have huge turnouts I might use 2.2 per person.

  18. Peter L. Taylor - January 27, 2017

Well, that makes it precisely 2.5 per person, does it not?

    624 x 2.5 = 1560

  19. Mary Harada - January 27, 2017

I went to ABQ the first time the National Masters was held there. For middle distance runners it can be tough because of the altitude. I swore that I would not return there for a meet as the altitude not only made me very slow it also made me ill.

I am not going to Korea either – it is a long and expensive trip, the hotels are expensive and I am still recovering physically and financially from the trip to Perth.
