Jerry Bookin-Weiner posts pics from Portland throws meet
USATF throws maven Jerry Bookin-Weiner sends word of two online photo albums from the masters national throws championships in Portland, Oregon. He writes: “There are a couple of guys in the UWP album whose names I didn’t know. Thank you, Jerry! It’s great to put names to faces, to see various techniques (nice camera to get these freeze-frames), and to get a look at the craziness that is the Ultraweight competition.
YAY! Lots of pictures of throwers!!! Congrats to my Az friends and all their success!

Great pictures, thanks! I’m amazed by Landa turning with the 98lb ultraweight. There wouldn’t happen to be video of this available, would there? Anyone else turn with the 98lb weight?

I didn’t see anyone taking video, but maybe someone did.
Yes, others did turn with the 98# weight, not many, but there were a handful of others. I believe the oldest of those was Bob Sager in M60. There are pictures of him doing it in the album as well.
Mark was really cranking on his last throw but couldn’t hold on as he went to finish and it went out the side of the square 90 degrees off rather than into the sector. Had he held that one it would easily have been his best throw.
Let’s not forget the lady volunteer who picked up that errant 98# to gave it back to the fielders…with ONE hand!
Not many turn-ers of the 98. Right side of square and sector was right up against a wall (cf. the pictures of Thomas Sputo) and the new, narrow sector doesn’t encourage turns, either.

I understand the sector for the ultras is narrow, but Anon is right, you’ve got the wall on the right and a ring on the left.
Where did Mark’s final 98# throw land, on the concrete? Ouch!
I live near Benedictine Univ (in Lisle, IL — a Chicago suburb), the site for next year’s Masters Throws meet, and I think they’ll have some areas that are much more open for the ultras.
