Tony Young shatters M40 American 3000 record
Tony Young’s incredible M40 indoor season continues. Yesterday he bettered the listed American indoor M40 record for 3,000 meters with a sensational 8:22.99 in Heat 2 of the Washington Invitational. The M40 world record is 8:09.13 by Marcus O’Sullivan (Ireland), in January 2002. Also, M40 Steve Plasencia (USA) has an 8:24.16 from January 1997 on the books, reports Alan Sigmon. The listed American record is 8:32.52 by Craig Fram. The mark, however, came on the University of Washington’s oversize 307-meter track, which disallows record consideration.
Race witness Tom Cotner reports: Tony “was in 4-5th place just off the leaders during the first 5 laps, went through 1500 in 4:11 and moved up hard to pass two guys with three laps to go and moved into second with two laps to go. He finished in second place behind Isaac Hawkins 8:18.33. All of Tony’s laps were in the 51 high range, with the exception of lap 7 (slower) and the last lap (faster).”
Young still has a chance for the regulation-size record at the USATF open indoor nationals, where’s he’ll run a masters exhibition 3,000 at Boston’s 200-meter track.

3 552 Ortman, David Unattached 7.85
4 553 Robbins, Steve Unattached 8.21
5 548 Hundley, Clyde Unattached 8.39
Morioka, who has just turned 60, is just a tick off the listed (and probably hand-timed) world M60 record in the 60 of 7.7 by American Payton Jordan in 1978. An auto-timed 7.80 is intrinsically superior to a hand-time 7.7. But another Harold — Tolson — holds the American record of 7.75 from the Boston masters nationals in 1978. And M60 Ron Taylor of Britain ran 7.76 in 1994.

I can not tell you how much I am looking forward to a “legal” Indoor effort this year at the Boston meet March 2nd. All of this Indoor running has been just used as “Speed Workouts” to see how my training is going through the Winter. My workouts in the past two weeks are really getting going, without sacraficing any base training. I hope to put something “special” out there soon. Good luck to you all!
