Puerto Rico WMA — smallest turnout in 22 years
Manuel de Jesus, a spokesman for next month’s WMA world championships in Puerto Rico, passes along the great news that three Web sites will be posting meet results in expeditious fashion. The bad news — results will cover only 2,600-plus athletes. This is the smallest turnout at a WAVA or WMA world championships since 1981, when the meet held in Christchurch, New Zealand, drew 2,400 athletes.
But back to the good news. Manuel writes: “In all three sites results will be posted no later than five minutes after the last competitor finishes.”
This is a HUGE breakthrough for masters track — putting us on the same footing as elite meets in the IAAF circuit. It also might help remove the bad taste of the Brisbane 2001 WMA meet, where results were delayed for weeks and sometimes months.
The sites where results are promised: Cyberscoreboard, Flash Results and the event’s home page.
In addition, the site has done something no other WMA meet has done before — post the names, dates of birth and events (and submitted “seed” marks) of athletes by country. (And with a handy count of athletes entered from each country!)
A few country links are still not “live.” But the traditional biggies — USA, Germany, Canada, Great Britain and Australia — are fully listed. Anf this year, Mexico is sending a big team.
So according to the Puerto Rico organizers, the biggest of the 74 national delegations are:
USA — 441 athletes
Germany — 275
Great Britain — 182
Mexico — 135
Canada — 88
