Germany suspends 3 masters for doping

Robert Koop, a German lawyer married to a world champion masters middle-distance runner (Annette Koop of Web site fame), is sadly reporting what he calls “the worst case” for the German masters scene. Three German masters — including a world record holder in shot and discus — have been suspended for doping violations. But what makes this latest leak interesting is that German authorities gave substantive details.

Unlike World Masters Athletics, which rarely acknowledges a doping case — even if it’s been publicized by the IAAF — the German trackmeisters issued a press release.
Robert Koop says: “As we wrote: It’s terrible. Here is the official press information of the German T&F Ass. DLV from this morning:
DLV suspendiert drei Seniorensportler
November 2004 suspendiert.
Koop concludes: “I think you will … understand the German text. The chemical words are like the English ones.”
Muschinski is a sprinter and middle-distance runner, Liedtke and Prochnau are throwers. All three are suspended.
The DAMM Championships are the German Team Masters T&F Championships (not the German Championships). Here are the results:
“Only the M40 team of TSV Ahrensburg is loosing the silvermedal because of Muschinski. He confessed; Prochnau too. Liedtke, owner of a Fitness Studio (!) at Luenen (Westphalia), was an AAA-thrower in the last 7 years. Now you can suppose that he was a DDD-thrower all the time – OK there is no proof but since some years there were rumours about his excellent performances.
Muschinski was tested between his first (800m) and second (?) event. His team tried a protest at the DAMM

because of these circumstances.
Here is a rough English translation of the German press release, courtesy of Google:
DLV three Seniorensportler suspend the Athleten Josef Muschinski, Klaus Liedtke and Ralf Prochnau because of the suspicion of a Dopingverstosses by the German Leichtathletik federation were suspended.
With all three Athleten the analysis of the urine samples, which had been taken from them on 11 September 2004 with the final fight for the German age group crew championship (DAM) in Luebeck, was positive.
The A-analysis of the urine sample of Josef Muschinski (M 50/Ahrensburger TSV) exhibited a Testosteron/Epitestosteron quotient > 6. The carbon abundance ratio mass spectrometry (GC/C/IRMS), accomplished afterwards, resulted in that the values of the Testosteron metabolites Androsteron and Etiocholanolon refer to an application of Testosteron or Testosteron Prohormonen.
Since the Athlet granted the income of the determined active substance, the investigation of the b-sample was after § 20 NR. 5 anti- Doping code not necessarily. Josef Muschinski was suspended on 20 October 2004.
The A-analysis of the urine sample of Klaus Liedtke (M 60/SuS Schalke 96), resulted in the presence of the active substance Oxymetholon forbidden by metabolites, which belongs to androgens to the group anabol of the Steroide. The b-analysis confirmed the result of the A-sample. Klaus Liedtke was suspended on 1 November 2004.
The A-analysis of the urine sample of Ralf Prochnau (M 40/Pulheimer sports club) resulted in the presence of the active substance Hydrochlorothiazid forbidden by metabolites, which belongs to the group of the Diuretika. Since the Athlet granted the income of the determined active substance, the investigation of the b-sample was after § 20 NR. 5 anti- Doping code not necessarily. Ralf Prochnau was suspended on 1 November 2004.
Here’s what I found on the three suspended athletes:
Liedtke is the M50, M55 and M60 world record holder in ther shot, and the M55 and M60 world record holder in the discus. He’s won at least six world WMA or WAVA championships in the throws and weight pentathlon, in which he also holds a world best.
Muschinski was the 2002 European M50 champion at 400 meters. This year he’s ranked sixth in the world. He was top 20 in all three sprints in the world as far back as 1999.
Prochnau is a throws coach in Germany.
German track authorities come down hard in doping cases because of the shame they feel for having been part (at least in the East) in state-sponsored drugging of athletes during the 1970s and 1980s.
Many questions remain unanswered, such as: How come these guys were nailed earlier? Liedtke appears to have been absent from recent world meets. Did he fear being drug-tested?
Liedtke, BTW, is the first masters world record holder to be nailed for doping. The other couple dozen have been lesser lights.
As usual, WMA is silent on these important developments.
