Christel Donley sets U.S. shot record at masters hep championships
While the rest of us were snuggled in warm jammies sipping hot chocolate, two dozen masters multi-eventers, including two women, chugged around the track over the weekend at the Tarble Athletic and Recreation Center of Carthage College in Kenosha, Wisconsin. They competed in the USATF Masters Indoor Heptathlon Championships. The event — held in January instead of the usual March — included (on Saturday) the 60-meter dash, long jump, shot put and high jump and (Sunday) the 60-meter hurdles, pole vault and 1000 (for men) and 800 (for women). Whew! Men’s results are here, and women’s results are here. Champions included M70 Emil Pawlik, M55 Bill Murray and W55 Kay Glynn, who turns 57 this week. The oldest entrant was Bill Daprano, 82. The other female entrant, Christel Donley, didn’t finish Day 2 but managed to set a W75 American indoor record in the shot, throwing the 3-kilo spheroid 7.09 meters (23-3 1/4) to beat the listed record of 6.94 (22-9¼) by Gloria Krug in 2008.
Sadly, I can’t tell whether any USATF hep records were set since USATF doesn’t list any! (Hard to believe? Check this out.)
But thanks to Kay for sending the photos and Jeff Watry for his part in organizing the championships.
And speaking of multi-eventers, check out this great profile/interview with Australian world champ and world record holder Marie Kay, courtesy of fellow Aussie Carmel Papworth-Barnum.

Congratulations, Christel. WOW! Those ARs are hard to come by. We met at the Springfield, MO, Sr. Games track and field meet two years ago. BTW,Your husband has a “catchy” name.smile. Jerry Smartt
Well done Christel- looks like you are on track for a great meet in Kamloops.
Great job Christel!! Congratulations!
Congratulations Christel. We in Southern Calif are proud of you
Ken, I don’t know if any records were set either and I was there. This meet was approved and voted on as a National Championship at the 1996 or 97 National Convention according to Jeff Watry. Jeff also told me that he has submitted results for record purposes for more than 5 years and yet no visible action has been taken by the records committee.
Christel,
Congratulations!
I see you must be in 75age group now.O,woe is me!!
But,also, according to info you used the 3k shot put.
And wondering if you will change over to the 2k this
year.I have not ordered new implements yet;but guess
we won’t be ranked if don’t use proper weights. If
you have heard anything on the change;would appreciate hearing more information.
Thanks,
Phyllis Provost
Thanks for the congrats, feels good after a kind of “lost season”, injuries and the “macular hole” surgery (try to look down for 12 plus days, and I mean DOWN! sleeping only on your stomach, and NO
sports. Kinda gets to you. At the end, I had trouble looking up, and even listening to books on tapes became a chore.
The reason for not competing the 2nd day, my right hamstring” talked”d to me on day one, and I had to stop the HJ – no misses so far- and hoping for the next morning. It did not work, so I made myself useful and officiated one group of polevaulters. that was fun and by the end of the competition, I knew everybodys name.
I am still hoping for Kamloops – after all the $$ we pd. to get there.
And Kay Glynn was awesome!
To Bill M. Yes, for some yrs. we were wondering if the Indoor Hep would be counted for records. I don’t
think it did, the single performances were considered, but not the overall standing.
So, it became kind of an “internal” record. The competition is great and so is the spirit.
Comradery – non plus ultra!
Jeff Watry is SUPERMAN on those 2 days and he hopefully knows how much we appreciate his work.
Phyllis: Yes, from May 1 st on, we will use the 2kg
shot (I still used the 3 kg) Don’t know who supplies that implement as of yet. I was sooo smart. After the announcement in Lahti, I went to a vendor next to the track and bought his last 2kg
shot and 0.75 kg discus, I WILL SHARE!
Believe me, I started laughing after I heard that the implement was changed to a lesser weight.
Welcome to 75 plus yrs. This is one benefit.
Christel
Hoch soll sie leben!!

Hope all’s well with you & Jerry. I need to practice vaulting more with him and do appreciate your hospitality.
