Wanna meet? Check out San Clemente Masters
M65 sprint stud Doug Smith, a force behind several masters meets in Southern California, is hoping for a good turnout at a new meet Saturday, May 28, at San Clemente High School in south Orange County. He’s also looking forward to the event for personal reasons: a match race with his training partner (and friendly rival) Colleen Barney. Entry deadline is May 20.
Anyhoo, here’s a recent update on the meet from Doug:
Wanted to give you an update on how our plans are progressing for the San
Clemente Masters’ Track Meet, being held on Sat., May 28th.
I. We have COLLECTED $2,200 in sponsorship money. Our goal is to raise a
total of $4,000+ in sponsorship funds. All net proceeds go to the high school’s T&F Program.
2. The sponsors will have their names printed on one or two professionally
printed banners that will be displayed inside the stadium. The main sponsor
will be screen printed on the back of the “T” shirts.
3. We have hired a person to operate the FAT system that the school bought.
4. A local physician bought and donated a new computer to the track & field
program; so the awards’ table will receive the results as soon as the main
FAT computer prints them. This will enable the award winners to collect
their “hardware” as soon as the results are printed, which should be within
three or four minutes after each race.
5. We are printing a small meet program that will list the event sponsors
with their logos. Plus, this program will list the WR and AR records for
each event/age group, and it will list the entrants who have pre-registered.
6. We will have forms for those who set WR and/or AR.
7. I have been assured that the meet’s results will be sent to NMN
immediately, which will ensure that they are placed in the next edition.
8. There will be a “snack bar” open for the sale of food and drinks to the
athletes and families/friends.
9. There are restrooms within 20m of the track, and are located in the same
building as the rest rooms.
10. Our entrant goal is for 150 athletes. Please encourage all of those
San Diego athletes to enter.
11. Our ad/entry form should appear in the next NMN.
12. We are in the process of mailing entry forms to past entrants of the
Saddleback meet. I kept some of the completed entry forms from past meets.
13. Food and water will be provided to all of the volunteers and meet
officials.
FYI: Even though Colleen Barney is “semi retired”, due to family
commitments, she has been training, somewhat, and will compete in the 100m,
and in my heat. She wants another shot at me in the 100m. We have been
training together, at times, and we have been trading “trash talking”
emails. We are having so much fun. As Dizzy Dean use to say, “Who da thunk
it!” Oh, I forgot, you are too young to remember Old Dizzy.
