Seeing is believing: Videos and photos capture Kamloops, Boston
It’s time to savor some photo and video gems of recent masters meets. Britain’s Lesley Richardson and Canada’s Doug Smith shot a gazillion photos at Kamloops worlds, and Chris Kalafarski (providing images to usatf.org) has posted 2,570 incredibly sharp shots of Boston indoor nationals. Over at YouTube, folks are uploading great clips from Boston and indoor worlds, including this dramatic W50 duel over 800 (below) between Cheryl Bellaire and Julie Hayden at Boston, won by Dr. B 2:33.19 to 2:33.30. Some M65 mile videos are here. A set of Canuckcentric videos from Kamloops is posted on the Canadian masters channel.
Ontario masters guru Doug Smith has hundreds of shots (with musical slide show) at his Kamloops gallery.
A monster set of 2,570 images at stopmophoto.com by Chris Kalafarski is a site to behold. He shoots many sports and shares albums on his Flickr account, Dozens of Chris’ best USATF masters nationals photos are posted in event categories at USATF.org. And USATF official Marilyn Mitchell contributed some shots to Carmel Papworth-Barnum’s Facebook page.
In addition to Kamloops, Lesley shot Belgian and British masters indoor nationals. Check out her Rikko2Photo galleries.
Here’s a great 4×2 relay video from Kamloops featuring the American gold medalists in W40 (Marjorie Milligan Jackson, Susan Wiemer, Maryline Roux and Lisa Daley) and photographer Richardson leading off the UK team in Lane 2:
And these are some of my favorite shots by Chris, who calls himself “Farski”:

The top picture is Susan Wiemer.
The shotputter appears to be Jim Barr (the low number tells me that).
As for the dramatic 400 involving winner Ed Winslow, 2nd finisher Robert Thomas, and bronze medalist Khalid Mulazim: Three M40+ competitors under 51.25 in the same race! What? Are you kidding? I am guessing (do not have the time or the energy to check) that this is the first time in the history of our program that this has been done. Unbelievable.
Actually, let me take that back about Jim Barr. The custom has been to assign the numbers alphabetically, and we can see that Khalid Mulazim has 597 and Robt. Thomas 834, which would make sense. However, I see that Ed Winslow is wearing 104. He should have a very high number, given his position in the alphabet.
Hmmm….. For years I have been using the alphabetic assignment system to identify athletes captured in photographs, but it appears there was a minor change in policy this year (which I can’t determine). Oh, well.
I am reliably informed that the 2001 edition of the M40 (also at Boston) had 3 runners who finished in 50.61 or better, even more remarkable than what we had this year. So……that’s at least twice in a decade that we have been blessed with absolute brilliance in the M40 400. As I said, I was “guessing”; regardless, it is amazing.
