Germans plan blitzkrieg for world indoor championships
World Masters Athletics is reporting on entries at the WMA world indoor championships in Linz (with parenthetical comments being WMA’s): “The entries are just partly registered, but so far more than 2,000 athletes are counted. Leading is Germany (up to now 650 and more are expected), second place to the host, Austria, with 432 (a fantastic surprise!), Great Britain 260, France 153, USA 85 (plus further entries the next days), Spain 83, Belgium 61, Finland 52. Even South Africa will come with 7 athletes. Percy Hirsch is convinced that Linz set a new attendance record in WMA’s Indoor-history.”
Germany will own this meet, again. (The inaugural WMA world indoor meet was two years ago in Sindelfingen, Germany, which beat out a far-better technical bid from New York City and led to some fireworks.) Also, a George Mathews column ripping the site selection process.
Whatever.
Question:
Who are the 85-plus Americans going to Linz?
Previous USA rosters have been posted, including the Puerto Rico team and the San Sebastian team. I’m guessing that the current roster isn’t set in stone, so it hasn’t been posted. Or maybe nobody has asked.
I’ll ask.

please do ask Ken, as usual it will be like pulling teeth to get USATF to post the roster of those who have sent in the registration – deadline January 10th. It is not possible to register now, so there should be a complete list available. I expect that we will see the list of the 85 US competitors on the WMA Linz website long before we see it on the USATF website.
Yes again it will be a European meet dominated by the Germans. And here is my bet for 2008 – to be held in France, again almost exclusively European dominated by the Germans, and the 2010 meet – bidders not revealed at this point – will also be in Europe!
And because I am waxing cynical here – given the dwindling number of USA uniform tops available – only to those registered for Linz – the next WMA meet in 2007 in Italy will reguire USA competitors to shell out again for new uniform tops – from the 2004 Olympic overstock warehouse? Right now there are no size small women’s singlets, they sold out last summer, I was sent a medium – and needed to cut many inches off the bottom – it was like a dress – no new ones were ordered. When the stuff on hand runs out – hey head for the USAFT.OverstockOlympicunifrom.com and be ready to shell out more money for new gear. Leaving the rest of us with a closet full of spiderman stuff.
