McBarnette blasts over own world indoor HJ record

Jim Barrineau isn’t M45 anymore, but he knows a good jump in that age group when he sees one. He wrote today: “Watched Bruce McBarnette jump 1.95m for a new 45-49 Indoor World record today in Landover, MD, with room to spare. Not really close on any of his 1.98 jumps. I managed a game 1.78 (5-10 in M50 age group). If he can stay fit for another two years, he may be the only guy capable of threatening Z-man’s 50 record.”

Bruce’s 1.95 (or 6-4 3/4) betters his own listed world M45 age-group record of 1.93 (6-4) set on March 29, 2003.
But the holy grail of masters jumpers remains the 2.00 indoor leap by Germany’s Thomas Zacharias in March 1997 — when Thomas was 50!

I was fortunate to be in attendance at yesterday’s Allcomer’s meet at the Prince George’s Sports and Learning Complex to witness Bruce’s World Record from about 6 feet from the bar. Bruce and Jim are not only gifted world class athletes, but quality individuals as well. They are always encouraging other competitors and willing to offer helpful and positive critique when asked. In my mind they personify what masters track and field is all about! Look forward to watching them in the future. Their technique is flawless and determination unsurpassed.
