Another M75 shot record reported for Dr. Oglesby in Florida
Gary Dixon of Sarasota reports: “At the Winter Sun Meet in Clermont, Florida, Dr. James Oglesby increased his American (M75) record in the shot. I don’t have the complete results (throwscoachflorida.com will soon) but I believe he went 13.17 meters (43-2 1/2). (Roald) Bradstock and (Mike) Brown were also chucking the jav, but they had to deal with a strong crosswind, so nothing wonderful in the javelin department.” Photo below indicates USATF was keeping an eye on things at the Florida meet. Also check out yesterday’s results from a University of Washington indoor meet in Seattle. Mike Waller took up where he left off in the M50 sprints last year, clocking 7.40 in the 60 and 23.75 in the deuce. And W45 Alyssa Tower ran the 3K on that “oversized” track in 10:44.85. (The listed American record is 10:02.55.)

Dr O went 13.19 yesterday…the complete results are posted at Andy Vince’s throwscoachflorida.com
Speaking of the USATF officials, the official in the photo only allowed us 4 throws in the shot, where the javelin and discus got the full six. Who knows if the record would have had a better. The above official will remain nameless, unless you recognize him. Both he and his wife (also a USATF official) decided to give us only four throws…when they went to assist the discus later, they were miffed that we were getting six throws there. She expressed her “discontent” a number of times as the discus went into throws five and six. I guess she wanted to get home and watch the playoffs. But the “official” reason they gave for only four throws in the shot was that they only gave four jumps in the LJ. Jeez, I wish I had two more there as well!
The correct link for the results should be http://throwscoachflorida.com/ Also, the throw was reported as 13.19m.
Weather was much better than the previous week when we threw with icicles hanging off the canopies at the track.
Results of the Florida meet are now posted here:

Does anyone know if there is a rule about the Long Jump and Shot Put needing to have the identical amount of attempts in one meet?
Some of the local USATF meets have been going to 4 throws/jumps on their entry forms, but we’ve been successful talking the officials into giving up 6 in the hammer and weight throws. Usually there’s not as many competitors in those events, so the officials go for it. Plus, we try to keep the event moving by retrieving implements quickly.
By “local” I mean the Illinois/Wisconsin USATF meets.
No rule that I know of mandates consistency. Would be nice, but the rules don’t address it. For better or worse, they also don’t mandate 6 attempts except in championship meets, which by definition are only USATF championship meets (association, regional, national).
Recent all comers at CAL had 30 throwers for shot and discus. I would love to have 6 throws but understand the need to have 4 with so many throwing.
As for Dr. O, while it’s impressive to see a 45+ throw over 45 feet it’s mind blowing to watch the arm speed of a 75 year old throwing 40 feet!!
Thanks for the heads up Greg and Jerry. Totally understand what you mean about the hammer and weight throw possibly getting more throws because of a small field of throwers. I kind of knew the rule about USATF championships meets getting 6 throws. There’s really no problem having 4 throws per event, but It would be nice to have meet organizers always advertise on their meet flyers or info. the amount of throws/jumps so that athletes know ahead of time what they’re allowed, especially if that athlete has a chance for an American/world record or are traveling a good distance to compete.
Mike Waller is awesome, and a pleasure to watch run. Hopefully he makes it down to the Hayward Classic this summer!
