Any Seattle-area masters athletes have shot at world/national titles?
Yesterday I got email from a Seattle newspaper writer: “I’m interested in writing about masters athletes and came across your name in that great New York Times story last year. I’m wondering if you might be able to direct me to some athletes in the Seattle area who might make good stories. I see that the National games are coming up in July. Has anyone from around here got a chance?” I supplied these names: Mike Waller, Martha Mendenhall, Dave Ortman and Tony Young. But I’m sure I’m missing some. Don’t be shy. If you want me to funnel your name to the writer, give me a holler.

Ken, I couldn’t find Tony Young’s name among the entrants for either Sacramento (worlds) or Berea (nationals). I assume he did not enter under a pseudonym.
In terms of Seattle residents, how about that David Cannon, the ex-Virginian out of James Madison University? David has been an exceptionally hard hitter over the years.
Sorry, Ken. I should have said that Tony is not running in Sacramento but he could conceivably run in Berea (most of the entries for nationals are not in — regular entry closes 6 weeks from tomorrow, I believe).
Ken, when you run the American masters athletics championships?
Can you believe it? I mean, I never thought that our flag could look more beautiful than it really is. “Gee, Tex, you really have an eye.” Yeah, I know. It’s an acquired thing.(^_^) Smartty
Dave Cannon is a threat in the X-country 8km m50 and also the 1500m, but he has stiff competition there I think. I don’t see Rick Becker or Joe Sheeran, but I’ll look some more. I’m west of Seattle in Port Townsend and managed to win the m45 half in Kamloops, but there are some crazy fast Olympic types in the marathon. I still could theoretically (I love that theoretical concept… ;p) team medal in the marathon or the 10k racewalk. It’s possible…… and if there are no shows and…and…and….cue Rocky music and montage…. ;p
I’ll keep checking. рџ™‚
Bill Iffrig m75 10k should be in the hunt рџ™‚
Bill is in the 5k too.
Rick Becker is a threat in the m55 5k and 10k.
Enrico (post no. 3):
Ventotto luglio (28 July) is the first day. The national athletics championships for masters will continue through 31 July. They will be held in Berea, Ohio, about 6 km from the Cleveland, Ohio airport.
Dave Cannon definitely is a contender for a title and I’m pretty sure Rick Becker is entered as well. Karen Steen, if she is healthy, is also a potential winner in her events. Joe Sheeran was running extremely well this fall/winter, but I don’t remember if he is entered.
Karen Steen is in the 400m hurdles рџ™‚
