Aussies Crombie and Kay named IAAF Masters of the Year

Australians Peter Crombie and Marie Kay have been named IAAF Masters Athletes of the Year, reports World Masters Athletics. Peter, a dominating M65 sprinter at Sacramento nationals, and Marie, a record-setting W50 multi-eventer, will be flown to Monaco for the IAAF Gala on November 21. This is the first time in the five-year history of the awards that two athletes from the same country have been so honored. Good on them! The last time an Aussie was honored was 2007 when racewalker Andrew Jamieson was joined by Phil Raschker at Monte Carlo.

Congrats to Peter and Marie. Great years for both, and an absolutely remarkable recovery from knee surgery for Peter, whose doctor, I believe, scoffed at the notion of his ever running again. He came back to beat our best in the big meets.

Congratulations Peter and Marie! These are two of the nicest, friendliest, most affable and wonderful athletes on the planet, truly the ultimate ambassadors of track and field in the world, open and masters. Asside from their obvious athletic talents, both athletes continuously demonstrate a work ethic, upbeat attitude and patience that is off-the-scale remarkable. While I have seen each of them win many a competition, their most impressive performances, to me, have often happened when they were injured or just plain out-performed. In these cases the other competitors were always graciously congratulated and lauded by these two Aussies. Here’s to their respective, continued success and contributions to masters T&F.

Fantastic news Marie and so well deserved. Its so good to be able to congratulate a great friend and fellow athlete. Have a great time in Monaco, I just wish I could be there to see you receive your award. I have also enjoyed photographing a lot of your performances at the WMA Championships. I look forward to seeing you in Sacramento both as a fellow athlete and also to photograph what I am sure will be some more amazing performances.
