Barrineau is now retired colonel, but not retired jumper
I sent M50 jumper Jim Barrineau the link to yesterday’s blog post and received more news in his reply. Jim writes: “I forgot to tell you I am now Colonel (retired) Barrineau. My last day in uniform was May 31st. I will be starting a new job just after Labor Day. I did clear 6’0″ before my 1.89 attempts. I plan on competing in the World Indoor in Linz, Austria, next March. That should be fun.” And fun for us to watch. Go get ’em, Jim!

Congratulations to Jim—Look at the latest Potomac Valley Track Results..interesting on two levels–Number one he did clear 6’0 placing him in the number two position for the year M-50-54 USA rankings–just a shade behind Keith Nelson and Number two he tied his high school son who also jumped 6’0 trying to keep up with his DAD!!!
Congratulations to Jim Barrineau for continuing to defy gravity and make it to 50. I certainly enjoyed watching Jim and Dwight Stone battle it out at WAVA-Buffalo in 1998 (watching because I was going out at a height they were coming in at).
I do see that Jim’s best was 7-6 1/2 and he’s angling for 6-2. That would be a 14 inch drop-off. (And no, drop-off is not the name of a Russian high jumper). At 52, my high jump drop-off has been seven inches, so maybe that’s another measure of the effects of gravity.
If there are other high jumpers out there, my yearly test is whether I can still touch a basketball rim. I could still do it this year, so my question is if my vertical lift has only dropped off by maybe three inches, why has my high jump dropped off seven inches?? Perspiring minds want to know.
