Beware Munich snafu: Port Alegre corrects its printed schedule

Remember the Munich 100-meter heats snafu in ’72? That could happen at Porto Alegre if you don’t keep your eye on the ball. I’m sure Team USA manager Phil Greenwald and others will notify entrants about schedule changes, but you also might keep an eye on the WMA homepage. The Porto Alegre site appears useless (and often won’t load pages because of too much traffic). Anyway, see this list of dozens of schedule changes at worlds, which starts in three days. And the 240 American entrants in Brazil are listed here by event (thanks to a USATF list). Among them are W65 Phil Raschker and M60 Bill Collins, legends who take a licking and keep on ticking.

Phil Raschker is among USA Masters Hall of Famers entered at Porto Alegre.

We made it… Be prepared to have a lot of patience while you wait for the registration and declaration.
    READ the handbook!.
People are very helpful, if we only could understand them…. but most of us don´t speak their language either, so there!!
When we checked into our hotel,NOBODY SPOKE ENGLISH,
The handed us a computer, where we typed our questions or request – same difference – and after reading the translation, they still did not have an answer…
The hotel and the staff will grow on us!
    I have not seen
that many shoestores, optical stores and …. trash… in a while. Downtown Porto Alegre is an adventure,

The stadium is almost!!!! prepared, that is CETE, have not seen the other places yet.

I forgot, there is a track meet coming up, like in 2 days….. wish us luck. The weather prediction: RAIN, for the combined events, deja vu from Riccione\\\\\\\\\\\\\\/
    just hope not!

Thank you so much for this report, Christel; I almost feel that I am a member of your traveling group. I tried to check the weather for you but found 16 listings for Porto Alegre, Brazil. Oh, well.

Would be interesting to get another report from you when the action gets under way. In the interim, much luck to you.

    ||||Pete, will try to…. just found out that the time will change here on the 20th, which means we will LOOSE an hour, so an 8 am start will be – yikes… need to double check! Thanks for taxis. Trying to find a bus, good luck, there are plenty but where do they go? Drivers do not speak English and locations are not clear, at least for us. If anybody has more info. let us know. YES, we read the handbook! One of the hotels here in downtown handed us a sheet with all kind of locaations and the estimated taxi prices….we will learn by the hour!

Some foreigners…wanted to talk politics at breakfast, we refused. Is the USA going down?

    till later!

Christel, to answer your last question (“Is the USA going down?”), I will say that that is probably too dangerous an issue to discuss at this point. In a few minutes I am going to the 7-11 to make a purchase; my U.S. dollar bills say “This note is legal tender for all debts, public and private.” If the clerk at 7-11 accepts the money I will assume that the US is still a going concern.

Regardless, it seems like a good idea to stay away from politics and instead talk about the meet, Porto Alegre, or something else. All the best, Christel.
