Bobby Whilden and Myrle Mensey finish season with more records
National Masters News reports in an email blast that Bobby Whilden, 76, has again broken his American record in the 100-meter dash — his latest being a fantastic 13.55 Wednesday at the Huntsman World Senior Games in St. George, Utah. “The wind was a legal 1.9 meters per second,” NMN says. “His time just missed the 13.54 world mark by Germany’s Bruno Kimmel in 2009.” I also got word that W60 Myrle Mensey upped two of her own American records in some weight throws. (I posted this video of the 12-pound throw, sent by Myrle, but got the place wrong.)
On Oct. 1 at the Lindenwood Fall Classic in Edwardsville, Illinois, she threw the 12-pound weight 16.63 meters (54-6), which was 18 inches beyond her world title mark of 16.23 (53-2) in Sacramento and her American record (16.24) set in 2009. She also threw 11.87 (38-11) in the 20-pound super weight throw, which is 3-9 farther than her indoor record 10.74 (35-2) set in March 2011 at indoor nationals. Myrle also had her best hammer throw of the year at 38.60.
In response to questions, Myrle wrote me:
Meet was sanctioned. USATF Ozark Fall Classic. … They had all the officials, implements were weighed. Results not posted yet. This is the website from the other throws meet they had this summer. They knew I was going for a record, so they had all the proper officials and paperwork. They are going to email me my copies. I’m confident it’s going to be okay. I left a message for the head official today.
What a great way to end the season. I will now spend the next 2 months working on my Foundation- Throwing and Growing 2nd Annual Winter Throws Camp for girls 8-18 on Dec. 27-29 in St. Louis.

When I was younger I was amazed at the abilities of the older sprinters. Now that I have reached the “autumn of my years” I am even more impressed. Bobby Whilden is absolutely sensational.
Myrle Mensey has impressed me a great deal in recent years with her ability as well as her friendliness. Good for you, Myrle.
Bobby Whilden, wow, sensational. Pretty sure this is the same cat who was a HS phenom and collegiate shazamer at Texas. Beautiful stuff, Bobby. Completely beside the point is a Smartty memory. “Gee, Tex,tell us this has something to do with 100 meters. Like, something..uh..exciting.” WRONG, origami lovers. It has to do with 110 yds. Remember those? No? You’re not over 40, eh? My favorite workout was 100 x 110 yds. with an average of ….wait for it…13.5. Bobby, with your current speed, you can run a hell of a 5K.
Smartty, he is definitely one and the same. Bobby was one of my idols in the 1950s, and now in the second decade of the 21st century he is one of my idols again.
Just reread your post, Smartty. You ran 110 yards one hundred times at 13.5 pace? You were a bigger “hoss” than I thought you were.
Congrats to both. And Merle, I wish I could put the shot like you!
The actual workout was 10 x 10 x 110. The recovery between the 110s in a set of ten was about 50 yds. The recovery between each set was 1-2 minutes. Always moving. No walking in those days. Jog recoveries. There you have it, Peter. On a good day, I can crank it out but strictly for mileage now. “I left my speed in San Francisco……” No weed involved of course!!! Smartty
