Bragging rights to whoever is first to identify this handsome gent

Dave Albo shot the USATF Mid-America Masters regionals in late August, and one of his best images showed a shot-putter at moment of chalky release, wearing a T-shirt that read “I Throw — Therefore I am.” It’s a beaut, and it graces the cover of the current issue of National Masters News. Unfortunately, the publishers couldn’t track down the name of the thrower. Anyone know this handsome fellow? The meet was in Fort Collins, Colorado. He looks to be in his 50s. (But could be older.)

First person to identify this thrower gets an all-expenses-paid trip to Perth worlds 2016. (But not from me.)

Winner who names thrower gets an all-expenses-paid trip to Perth worlds 2016.

Ken, I’m going with William “Bill” Harvey, the former Occidental College head coach.

Speaking of missing throwers, I got this note from a San Diego coach, Bill Aaron (Adjunct Instructor, School of Exercise and Nutritional Sciences at San Diego State University, Coach, Cross County/Track & Field at Kearny High School and Recreation Class Instructor-Running at Aztec Rec Center–San Diego State)

    Bill writes:

Hi Ken, I’m the head T&F coach at Kearny High and we are in a desperate need of a throws coach. Please if you could help me spread to word. I think it would be wonderful if we could find a masters thrower who would like to coach young talented high school kids.

Please pass along my cell 619-209-1372. Thank you and Merry Christmas.

    It’s Bob Maltby.

Bill Harvey would be honored IF IT was him, but it “ain’t”…
    Curt, you are correct!!

Merry Christmas to ALL and next time we will insist, that athletes wear their bib numbers, nice try!
I mostly try to avoid it.

My left over Latin: cogito, ergo :I am writing this..
can never find a emoticon on this blog ???

I’ll concede to Curt Morgan. Maltby is in the same age group as Bill Harvey (M65) but is not nearly as illustrious a thrower.

Curt, enjoy your free trip to Perth (see the caption to the photo above).

Thanks to everyone who identified Bob Maltby! Once Ken posted the query I thought it would be a pretty quick response! Unfortunately, sometimes we have to rush National Masters News to the printer without the luxury of being able to identify all the photos… it kills me to do that, but deadlines dictate!

Thanks, Ken for putting the question out there, thanks Dave for such an incredible photo, thanks Christel for bib numbers, and thanks Bob!!!

    Happy Holidays everyone!!!

Ken, as first-in-line with the Maltby ID, my bags are packed to Australia. Which airline are you sending me to Perth on? Oh, wait…was the tip-off the sub-heading, “bragging rights”, and I go when pigs fly? My Aussie wife, Beth (an up-and-coming race walker; she hails from Brisbane) was jumping up and down something fierce for a while yesterday, higher than a ‘roo, too. Unless, of coure, Peter Taylor had the Perth trip right all along?

    It is a great picture!

Check is in the mail, Curt!

Ken. Does he win peanuts, choice of beverage and neck pillow with his free trip?

    Happy holidays all.
