Carlius funeral set; IMGA says WMA has no guaranteed seat

WMA’s Newsboard updates us on services for the late president of World Masters Athletics: “The funeral of Torsten Carlius will be held in Saint Maria church in Helsingborg, Sweden, on Thursday morning December 15th, 10:30 AM. The family requests no flowers and that people contribute to the Carlius Foundation, which was started by Torsten’s father, Nils Carlius 1971, and supports young talented athletes in Helsingborg.”

Meanwhile, the secretary general of the International Masters Games Association replied to my inquiry on how IMGA will replace Carlius on its board of governors. (My hidden motive was to learn whether IMGA considers WMA an automatic member, requiring its top official to serve on the IMGA board.)
Here’s what I hear from the sec-gen, Børge Kaas-Andersen:
“Torsten Carlius has passed away, and he leaves … an empty spot, not only in IMGA but in the whole masters movement. Torsten’s seat (on) the Board of Governors will be vacant until our General Assembly, which will be held in Seoul, Korea, on 4 April 2006. In fact, all governors are up for reelection, and as our Statutes prescribe, it will be the members of IMGA (International Sports Federations) that will elect the board … No federation … has an automatic seat. The nominated candidates will all be elected by the General Assembly.
“Torsten has been actively taking part in the creation and buildup of International Masters Games Association, and he has been a loyal member of the Board and a good friend of all members. He will especially be remembered for his enthusiasm in building the European Masters Games Association, and his support for IMGA to become the world umbrella organisation to cover regional organisations in the 5 continents of the world.
“He will be missed in our future development.”
