Athenas, Central Park TC smash 4×4 records at Millrose Games

Bernard Lagat

A W50 Athena quartet beat the listed WR for the indoor 4×4 and a W60 Central Park Track Club team apparently claimed an American club record tonight in New York City as the Millrose Games debuted in the Armory instead of the traditional Madison Square Garden. See results here (and below). The Athenas clocked 4:27.73 to smash the listed WR of 4:43.27 by an American team in 2004. Congrats to Debra Hoffman, Lorraine Jasper, Julie Hayden and Dr. Cheryl Bellaire! No names were attached to the CPTC results, but their time of 6:06.00 is better than the listed club record of 6:28.80 by Liberty AC’s 2006 team of Mary Harada, Carrie Parsi, Regina Wright and Molly Johnson. Anyone have their names? Nice runs, ladies! In other Twitter news, M35 Bernard Lagat broke the American indoor record in the 5000 by 4 seconds, clocking 13:07.15. (There is no M35 age-group record in the 5K. Just the 3K, which Bernard holds.)

On Facebook, Athena TC posted image of its W50 world record claimants.

Congratulations to all of our great masters performers. I will be the first to say, however, that something seems amiss with the times for the women’s 4 x 400 40+.

It seems perfectly reasonable to believe that Central Park TC New Balance A, featuring Lisa Daley and Terry Ballou, was the winner in 4:18.76. I just don’t see how Athena B got second in 4:23.27.

On paper, Athena A, with a team of Jane Brooker, Terri Rath, Maryline Roux, and Charmaine Roberts, would be about 25 seconds faster than Athena B (Haubrich, Glassman, Strange, and Hankin), and yet they were 26.08 seconds BEHIND that squad. Only three things could have happened, as far as I can see:

    a. The results were switched (Athena B was given Athena A’s time).
    b. Athena A dropped the baton and had to go back to get it.
    c. Athena A had one or more runners injured during the course of the event.

I would love to know which of these three things happened.

On paper, yes. In real life, people fall down, or trip, or have legs subbed by different people. Looking forward to eyewitness accounts, especially o the age-old questions: 1) How were the masters treated? and 2) Was anyone in the stands for the masters events?

  3. Ace Bond - February 11, 2012

The event was streamed live on YouTube….I do not recall any dropped batons – so maybe (a)”results switched” may be the culprit. The stands appeared full when the Masters relay was run and the crowd was very supportive. From all appearances, it looked like a great event to participate in.

BTW, I believe that the full meet will be available for replay online @ YouTube “Armory Track” channel starting tomorrow.

Cool! I can embed the video here (if I don’t forget).

Congratulations to Debra Hoffman (could that be Debra Deutsch, who anchored the Athena 4 x 100 team last spring at the Penn Relays?), Lorraine Jasper, Julie Hayden, and Cheryl Bellaire, a very nice group indeed.

Let’s see, an average of 66.93 per leg for runners 50+. Terrific.

Am still wondering how in 40+ the Athena A team got beaten by the Athena B team by 26 seconds, especially since superstar Charmaine Roberts presumably anchored the A team!

  7. Sylvie Kimche - February 12, 2012

Thanks for the report on the Millrose Games last night at the Armory.
FYI, the 4x400m W60+ NB CPTC team who broke the American club record last night was comprised of:
    Sylvie Kimche
    Judith Tripp
    Mary V Rosado
    Deborah Barchat

    Thank you!
    Sylvie

  8. Caryl Baron - February 12, 2012

    The CPTC 60+ women were:
    Sylvie Kimche
    Mary V. Rosado
    Judith Tripp
    Deborah Barchat

  9. Lisa - February 12, 2012

They got the Athena team results mixed up. Charmaine Roberts and her “A” teammates finished second.

  10. Alison Suckling - February 12, 2012

Congratulations you guys! You ARE AMAZING !! Well done and well deserved.

Congratulation to Southwest Sprinters TC’s M40 team for winning and setting a new meet record. (It must be stated that Sprint Force America, previous meet record holder, set the record on a more difficult track – Madison Square Garden.) Still, SWS TC ran exceptionally well. Proud of ya all!!!!

  12. Cheryl - February 12, 2012

Pete They must have switched teams because Charmaine passed me about midway of my leg. Yes, it is the same Debra Deutsch. She got married and is now Hoffman.

Besides the Masters 4X400 masters runners also ran the club DMRs, sprint medleys & 4X200 against much younger runners. Overall a good experience.

  13. Mary V. Rosado - February 12, 2012

    Hi Ken
You may know the names of the women of the Central Park New Balance 60+ team that posted 6:06.00 at Millrose but if not — in their running order: Sylvie Kimche, Judy Tripp, Mary V. Rosado and Deborah Barchat.

    Mary Rosado

  14. peter taylor - February 12, 2012

Thank you, Cheryl. It’s a definite from all sources — Charmaine Roberts, on Athena A, was the second runner to cross the line in 40+.

Anyway, it was good that you got the record and that you were able to run an 800 in the distance medley relay as well (against much younger runners).

  15. Gary - February 12, 2012

It was a great meet. Good job by all 4 x 400 teams….

  16. tony young - February 12, 2012

    Well done ladies

  17. Dave - February 13, 2012

Super track meet. The track was fast. Kudos to the Armory organizers.

  18. Rob Lemke - February 13, 2012

Great job by all the Masters teams. And the Armory and Millrose people put on a great meet. Seperate race videos are now available at http://www.armorytrack.com

  19. Ed Winslow - February 13, 2012

@Ken…I thought it was a nice event. Considering this was the first time at the Armory, I think the organizers did a good job. The crowd was into it and, of course, the track is fast. Warming up was a challenge, but I’m not sure what more they can do given the space. Overall, a good time!

  20. Warren Graff - February 14, 2012

In a message I sent to the Armory folks, I thanked them for putting on a great meet and for adding the 50 and 60 age groups. I also asked them to consider next year providing medals or awards for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places in each age group. And I also asked that they consider establishing some sort of order in the warm up area, which can only be called chaotic, now. Asking those who are sleeping, sitting, stretching, doing leg swings, walking, etc. to do those activities out in the main hallway would be a start. Folks would need to get to the rest rooms, of course, but otherwise it would be so helpful if the hallway was used only for fast run-throughs (out toward the entrance) and jogging back (toward the rear of the hallway. The barrier could be used to separate those doing the run throughs from the joggers. If you recall, both were on the same side of the barrier heading right into each other.
