Christian Cushing-Murray repeats as Carlsbad 5000 masters champ
While waiting for my wife to pass by, I shot the men’s and women’s masters races at today’s Carlsbad 5000. Christian Cushing-Murray, 42, won the men’s race for a second straight year (picking up another check for $1,000). His time was about 14:40. Amazing. He told me afterward that he took Coach Peter Magill’s advice not to take the lead too early. Cush says he went ahead just before the final turn for home. I don’t know the women, but I got some nice shots of them as well. See my gallery for the shots from this morning. (The men’s race started at 7 and and the women’s at 8.)

Great pics Ken!
Two women you do know, Ken, are Carmen Ayala-Troncoso (blue) and triple world champion (2009, Finland) Lisa Valle in the sunglasses.
Carmen appears to be wearing no. 6070; Lisa seems to be sporting no. 7851.

Just to be clear (and so credit goes where credit is due), my only “coaching” affiliation with Cush is my race advice to him when it comes to Carlsbad. Cush’s training is a mix of workouts led by Coach Bill Sumner of the Cal Coast Track Club and those of Cush’s own devising. Oh, and I tell him not to go out too fast in cross-country too … and to let older wiser balder clubmates beat him if he wants access to the team beer cooler.
Seriously, congrats bigtime, Christian! This was a huge win. You earned it. And as your pseudo-coach, I’m formally declaring your bid for a Three Peat! 😉
