Complete results of 12 WAVA world meets are online
The World Veterans Athletics Championships — aka the WAVA or WMA world meets — have been held outdoors 16 times since the Toronto inaugural in 1975. But until recently, complete results from only the past four were online (1999 Gateshead, 2001 Brisbane, 2003 Puerto Rico and 2005 San Sebastian). Today I’m delighted to announce that complete results from all but four are on the Web. The latest additions are 1981 Christchurch, 1983 Puerto Rico, 1987 Melbourne and the big enchilada — 1993 Miyazaki. (It was so big, I had to create men’s and women’s files.) Still MIA are 1985 Rome, 1989 Eugene, 1991 Turku and 1997 Durban. Only abridged results (from National Masters News) are online from that quartet (thanks to Jeff Brower’s efforts). The latest results are courtesy of M65 thrower Bernd Rehpenning of Germany.
For those keeping score, here’s the lineup of links:
1975 Toronto, Ontario, Canada, as image PDF, searchable PDF
1977 Gothenburg, Sweden, as image PDF, searchable PDF
1979 Hanover, Germany, as image PDF, searchable PDF
1981 Christchurch, New Zealand as image PDF, searchable PDF
1983 San Juan, Puerto Rico, as image PDF, searchable PDF
1985 Rome, Italy as abridged searchable PDF
1987 Melbourne, Australia as image PDF, searchable PDF
1989 Eugene, Oregon, USA as abridged searchable PDF
1991 Turku, Finland as abridged searchable PDF
1993 Miyazaki, Japan as men’s and women’s searchable PDFs
1995 Buffalo, New York, USA, as searchable PDF
1997 Durban, South Africa, as abridged searchable PDF
1999 Gateshead, Britain, as image PDF, searchable PDF
2001 Brisbane, Australia, as image PDF, searchable PDF
2003 Carolina, Puerto Rico, on WMA Web site
2005 San Sebastian/Donostia, Spain, on WMA Web site
So here’s where we stand:
We have the official WAVA or WMA results books online from 10 host cities:
1975 Toronto
1977 Gothenburg
1979 Hanover
1981 Christchurch
1983 San Juan
1987 Melbourne
1993 Miyazaki
1995 Buffalo
1999 Gateshead
2001 Brisbane
We have abridged (sometimes only top 5) results from National Masters News coverage of four meets:
1985 Rome
1989 Eugene
1991 Turku
1997 Durban
And we have results on the WMA site of these meets:
1999 Gateshead
2001 Brisbane
2003 Carolina
2005 San Sebastian
So here’s the deal: We’re in the final lap of the Holy Grail Stakes — complete results of all world masters outdoor championships. We just need the official results books from Rome (1985), Eugene (1989), Turku (1991) and Durban (1997). Let me know if you can part with any or all of these for a few short weeks.
With the Fantastic Four online, we’d be able to call closure on this 2-year-old quest.
Meanwhile, savor the latest four, especially the Big Kahuna of October 7-17, 1993, which drew 11,475 athletes (the biggest WAVA meet by far) to the ancient land of Himuka.

Great work. Once the last bit of data mining is complete, who is willing to compile a WAVA/WMA meet record list?
Perspiring minds want to know.
As a result of my initial search for historical memorabelia I now have a copy of the official results books for 1983 San Juan, 1985 Rome and 1989 Eugene in my possession.
From my own experience working in the results office, I also saved a print out of (what I hope is) all of the 1995 Buffalo results–in case anything is missing from that results book.
Who should I send these to so they will be properly processed into searchable PDFs? Any volunteers?
By the way, this is also what I hope to achieve for USATF results; National, Regional and Association levels, as the first information to post on our history section. If anybody has any results prior to 1977, please contact me.
I have dibs on the Rome, Eugene and Buffalo materials. I’ll scan and add to the archive.

This is brilliant news. I was going to put a plea in Running Fitness for the missing years but I see that Andrew Hecker has come up with the goods.
I will mention your blog anyway: the whole Masters’ world should know of this.
