Costa Rica to host WMA regional meet for our neck of the woods

Sandy Pashkin is prez of region.

Jim Proctor posted this note on Facebook: “It’s OFFICIAL! The NCCWMA North America-Central America-Caribbean [Regional] Masters Championships will be held August 2014 in San Jose, Costa Rica. Rainbow taken from the Crown Plaza Hotel before signing, a good omen, with President Marcos Fourier ADEMA, President NCCWMA Sandy Pashkin from Oregon USA, Brian Keaveney, Vice President Stadia NCCWMA from Toronto, Canada, Magda Molina vice president ADEMA. Website up soon but for now email me at jim@runwithjim.com.†I have no clue how the regions pick their meet sites. They just appear out of nowhere. Nice (but bare-bones) website,. though Bidders see this form. The 2012 regionals were in St. John, New Brunswick. Another gift from my FB feed: the new 228-page WMA Handbook, which includes the Age-Graded Tables, called age factors, which help you score multi-events but also compare yourself with Usain Bolt (as we all are wont to do). The Age Factors start on about page 153. The WMA Constitution, implement and hurdle specs and addresses and email for all major players are listed, too.

St John was so well-run that I had hoped the Saskatoon bid would stick. Oh, well. Glad there’s a meet.

Whoops! I posted an unedited version of the WMA 2013-2016 handbook. The Age Factors are wrong, I’m told. A source says the handbook I fetched from Facebook hadn’t been properly vetted by the WMA Council. So a new handbook will be posted after leadership has reviewed it. I’ve deleted the handbook PDF from this site.

Hello TB, in my experiences with putting on events. The only way the same country would get a meet like this two times in a row is if no one else put in a bid. It has nothing to do with how well St. John performed, the whole purpose of the event is to move it around the region.

Has anyone found scheduling, venue, hotel and entry information for this meet? THANKS.

The Costa Rica facility looks amazing … I am confident we will have quite a showing from Canada this year! This site has a tentative agenda up – http://www.nccwma.com. I hope they get the registration and accommodations up soon.

Where can one find NCCWMA records? Or at least results from past meets. Thanks!

  9. Ken Stone - April 10, 2014

Mike, I’m not sure where records and results are. But these are the people to contact:

Martin Gasselberger’s old site had nccwma results:

tb: thanks. I see that they were keeping the records current until 2004 and then gave up. There must have been some meets before 1998 as some of the records do not appear in any 1998+ meets.

Mike, I announced the 1996 “North Americans” in Eugene, and that was definitely not the first edition of that meet. I have no idea when the meet actually began.

  14. Mike Fortunato - April 11, 2014

Peter — thanks. I suppose one could trust the records as of 2004, as reported in the results of that meet, and build an up-to-date record book from there. I will just be putting together what I need for my own needs for now. BY THE WAY, does anyone know why this meet didn’t include South American from the beginning? “Meet of the Americas” might have made more sense.

  15. Jerry Bookin-Weiner - April 12, 2014

Mike – when WAVA (previous name of WMA – set up its world regions they decided to make South America a separate region. If you look at the FIFA regions for soccer you’ll see they are virtually identical to the WMA regions. I don’t know if one has anything to do with the other, but the similarity is striking. In fact, the countries in NCCWMA are identical to those in CONCACAF.

  16. tb - April 12, 2014

Yep, it’s just like CONCACAF and CONMEBOL. You have to draw the lines on a region somewhere.

  17. Mike Fortunato - April 12, 2014

    I hear you. Thanks.

For soccer, of course, SA is at least the equal of the rest. Not so in track and field.

About the names,(initials)… NORCERA, CONCAFAC & CONMEBOL, refers only to soccer nomenclature, and there should be used only in soccer terms. Erroneusly initials “NORCECA” were used to refer to the north, central and caribbean region when referred to track and field, too… There seems to be that in 2012, at regional championship on Saint John, Canada… the old name or initials were changed to a new initials: NCC/WMA… to refer to that region: north AMERICA,(U.S., CANADA, MEXICO) central AMERICA (GUATEMALA, BELICE, EL SALVADOR,HONDURAS, COSTA RICA & PANAMA) and caribbean AMERICA (PUERTO RICO, CUBA, JAMAICA, HAITI, REP DOMINICANA, BAHAMAS… and the rest of a lot of islands on the caribeean sea) Someone interested in participate at NCCA/WMA2014, visit the page https://www.nccwma2014.com registration is still open… but contact the team manager of each country for further information or contact at the page.
