Dates announced for 2009 Clermont masters nationals
The 2009 USATF masters outdoor nationals will be held July 9-12 at the National Training Center in Clermont, Florida, according to this hastily posted stub of an official site. (Note the reference to the meet being July 7-12 at one point.) Comments posted on this earlier blog entry telegraphed the info informally a couple days ago. The dates (the earliest in recent memory) allow folks a couple weeks to rest up for the Lahti world meet, which starts July 28, or the National Senior Olympics in Palo Alto, which starts August 5. Whew! Glad we have that matter out of the way. Ironically, the host NTC calendar doesn’t mention the 2009 masters nationals. In nine days, the NTC will host WMA regionals. Here are the current entries.

I don’t know where you get your dates for the National Senior Games ken – but according to the NSG website – the dates are August 1-15. The Track and Field format for the games in Louisville in 2007 – older track and field athletes competed the first week – and the younger ones the second week. If I recall correctly the age dividing line is 65-and up, and 50-64. I assume it will be the same in 2009, So – if you are talking about track and field athletes 50-64 – the dates probably are Aug 7/8-15, the older ones Aug 1-7. IF one was wealthy enough and among the younger athletes – one could compete in Lahti and fly immediately to San Fran – for the older competitors – there is no chance of doing that even if one wins the Megamillions and buys a private jet.
Regarding the WMA regionals: Some of the entrants are at it again by listing bogus times on their entries. Or, it could be a “typo”. Just one example is in the M65 100m there is Jose Rubi from Nicaragua with a listed time of 12.10, which is quite a time for one who is 67, especially when it is considerably better than the WR. Hopefully, it is a “typo”, but reporting bogus times for entries in meets continues to be irritating.
I believe the last time the national meet was this early was 1991 in Naperville, Ill., when it held over a long 4th of July weekend. Very hot, near 100, as I remember and it was the last time I long jumped well, before the injuries started coming in droves. Anyway the early date does have some advantages – its before the heart of hurricane season. Even a relatively mild storm like the current Fay can ruin things with all the rain. It should also allow some masters who coach high school football to compete – the usual early August date coincides with the start of fall practice in a lot of states.
There are a few people who will be competing in both the Masters Nationals and the Club Nationals (and others that may be supporting their team) at the Club nationals. I assume that they won’t be scheduled for the same weekend.
The WMA Regionals at Clermont next week (Thursday through Sunday) should be quite an event, to say the least. In the 100-m dash alone I quickly counted 16 teams: Aruba, Bahamas, Belize, Canada, Cayman Islands, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Jamaica, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Puerto Rico, Surinam, Trinidad & Tobago, and United States of America. Wow!! What a meet.
Fortunately for masterstrack.com, we have at least two contributors to this blog who are listed among the entrants: (1) Mary Harada and (2) simpdog. Mary Harada has already agreed to give us the lowdown on everything that’s important. Simpdog, I hope you will post your opinions as well after you come back. I want to know how a sprinter like you will manage to stay cool and comfortable all day long at Clermont. After all, the great majority of the time you will not be running or even warming up. I also want you to report on how they handle the declarations, the decisions on whether to run trials or go straight to finals, etc. And it wouldn’t hurt to know how well they do with the announcing.
Best of luck to you and Mary H. in the competitions.
Peter, I’ll take the laptop and give the blog as many updates as I can…
I read the rest of your post..Peter, I train in Corsicana, Texas…at the HS stadium (seats 10,001 thanks to Texas HS Football) the temperature was a humid 100 degrees at 3pm today…Florida heat will be a piece of cake, especially since they’ll be running most of my races in the morning hours..
Simpdog: I am sure you will be ready for the competition. You’ll have some tough sprinters to go against, but probably no one as tough as Usain Bolt (and he is in M20, anyway). Will be looking forward to your reports.

Elijah–If you’re 71 years old and your 100-meter time is in the 11-second range, Usain Bolt will be asking for your autograph. The listed M70-74 WR for 100 meters is 12.77 (see http://www.world-masters-athletics.org/records_output/rec_list_outdoor_m.php).
If there is anyone who does not believe that my time for the 100 meters is better than the world record for a 71 years old man I am willing to be timed by them.
(some one wrote that Usain Bolt will ask for my autograph if I ran the 100 meters in the 11 second range.) I am a young 71 year old sprinter.
Best regards
Elijah Cole Jr.
