Deadline for indoor worlds effectively today (Feb. 8), she says

Marilyn Mitchell, USATF wonk

Marilyn Mitchell writes (and shouts): “PLEASE TELL ATHLETES TO REGISTER TODAY, IF THEY ARE GOING TO  COMPETE IN JYVASKALA. ALTHOUGH THE DEADLINE IS FEBRUARY 12, MANY ATHLETES IN OTHER COUNTRIES AS WELL AS IN THE U.S. ARE HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE REGISTRATION PROCEDURE, AND THERE MAY BE A DELAY OF ONE OR TWO DAYS BEFORE YOUR REGISTRATION IS COMPLETE.  The organizers have sent a recent message saying that the February 12 deadline is firm. One problem:  the Fraud Unit of one of my credit cards called and said that because the Card Holder is in Country A (in your case, the USA), the recipient of the payment is in Country B (Finland) and the card processor is in Country C (probably Italy), the card companies’ computers are flagging and stopping the payment process, because this is the typical scenario for certain types of credit card fraud.â€

Marilyn’s email continues:

This may be why some people are having problems completing the registration and payment process.

I would suggest that the cardholders CALL AND PRE-ADVISE their credit card companies about the transaction, advising that they are going to make this payment, giving information about the recipient of the funds and the approximate Euro amount.

    One interesting question would be:

    How many entrants are there?

  2. Rob D'Avellar - February 9, 2012

    Peter,

The entrant list, updated on February 6, is at this link:

    http://wma2012.jyvaskyla.fi/entry_booklet

Scroll down to USA. Many conspicuous absences.

The entry list is not updated hourly or daily. However I suspect that there will be few from the USA. On another list (not updated since the end of January) – no USA race walkers, one only for the half marathon, and 3 for the x-c.
One of the problems with the registration system is that it takes a bit of time for the payment page to show up – after you click the button marked Salva. the payment page is an external site. I suspect some are giving up too soon. There is a very good pdf page that walks one through the registration step by step. Read that first before trying to register.
I saw something yesterday about almost 2000 registered.
The Face Book page put up by the LOC has lots of good information – including garmin readings of the x-c course and photos of the non-stadia venues – including a youtube of the x-c course.

Thanks for that information, Rob and Mary. I counted 42 athletes for the USA, with Wm. Harvey listed twice. I will make the count 41, therefore. Assume we will end up with about 70 US athletes when all is said and done, but I could be way off.

It’s a lot of money, but I am sure many of the athletes will enjoy it. Oh, well, per Marilyn Mitchell it is essentially over now in terms of entry. We will see how it all plays out.

Registration closes on Feb 12th – I have no idea why Marilyn is saying Feb 8th. The LOC seems to be very well organized and has responded very quickly to my emails or comments on their FB page. It does not take 3 days to register – it takes all of 10 minutes if one is organized, has the credit card at hand, and reads the instructions. Wait for the payment page after you finish filling out the registration form completely – and click SALVA. Be patient – it may not pop up instantly. This is not rocket science. If you have a problem – email the tech support people for help – after you read their very good pdf file on how to use the registration system written in English.
If you have never used your credit card outside the US – it may be a good idea to call them up and tell them where you will be using it. That may take much longer than registering on the LOC website.

If you are having problems using a credit card to pay your entry fees, they also accept Paypal. I got my email confirmation for my registration and payment within an hour of registration.

Marilyn has got it spot on-I had the same problem,it took weeks to get it sorted,my bank would not accept my payment overseas.
At the time i could not understand why my payment was not accepted,it caused me lots of stress.
Thanks to Mikko at The Worlds in Jyvaskyla was very nice and kept me in touch finally got it sorted.
It is much better now by all accounts with introducing payment method “paypal”

Paypal is how I did my entry and it went straight through and I appeared on the registered list of athletes. I would reccommend if you can use paypal to use it as it seems the most troubleless transaction method.
