Del Grande is grand at Ontario masters meet
Karla Del Grande chaps my hide. She also can whip my butt. She’s more than a year older than me (I’m 50), and she runs faster. At the Decatur nationals last year, she won the 100 in 13.13 — a day after I ran a prelims time of 13.31 and she set a WR for 400 at 60.49. Can’t she give a guy a break?
Now news arrives that Karla, of Toronto, broke her own indoor WR for W50 400 with a 61.38 400 at Saturday’s Ontario Indoor Championships at York University in Toronto. That’s equivalent to about 52 seconds for open levels. Her old record was 62.28. She also ran a 27.33 200 to break her own Canadian record. She has no shame.
Other highlights of the Ontario meet: Ed Whitlock (M70) ran a 10:52.40 3000 for a new world age-group record. And Jim Wetenhall (M50) of Ohio broke the American record in the 25-pound weight throw with an amazing 20.20 (66-3 1/4).
But Del Grande is my new hero. I’ve scoured the Net to learn her secret, and I think I found it. She uses hypnosis to persuade herself that she’s actually 25 years old!
Or maybe not.
Anyhoo, look for more records from Karla this season.
