Detailed hourly sked posted for Lyon worlds: Will it work for you?

Organizers of Lyon worlds have to pack 8,042 athletes into four stadia in hundreds of events over two weeks in August. A schedule-maker’s nightmare. One hopes they used a Cray computer. In any case, the detailed schedule is now posted. I’ve written to WMA, seeking an interview with the schedulers to learn what challenges were met. I doubt everyone will be happy. (I’m talking to you, throwers who run middle distances.) Take a look at your events and venue assignments. How will you manage?

Here's top page of Lyon sked, which tries to squeeze 8,042 registrants into a single meet.

Here’s the top page of Lyon sked, posted this week and hoping it fits y’all.

I am a little bit confused about the location of the marathon. It was originally listed as taking place on Place Bellencourt. Now is listed on Parilly, Stade de Rhone. Those are two very different places.

I see, they changed the route of the marathon. This is irritating for 10 of my marathon friends since we booked our accommodation based on the start of the marathon (one block away). Now we will have to find transportation around 5am.

Once more, the WMA outdoor advancement procedure is not respected ! ðŸ™

It will not work for me.
    400 HH M55 08/09/15 9.50 am at Parilly, 200 08/09/15 10.10 am at La Duchere

A schedule improvement from WMA-Porto Alegre (2013) where they had the M60 finals of the 300m Hurdles and High Jump at the same time in stadiums a half hour cab ride apart. (And, yes, I somehow managed to do both with a 4th in the hurdles followed by the cab ride and a 2nd in the High Jump.)
This time the 300m Hurdles are August 11 and the High Jump on the 15th.

However, with all the changes this is another example of why no one can rely on a previous event schedule to plan out your events.

It is, however, VERY helpful and unusual for the event times to be posted so far in advance of the meet. Perhaps it will show USATF (and NSG) that posting event times does not have to wait until the week before national competitions start.

Alas, I will be stuck on this side of the pond, so best of luck to all competitors at Lyon.

As far as Jax detailed sked, I’m told: End of weekend – Games Committee fully engaged at NSG

  7. Peter L. Taylor - July 11, 2015

Thanks, Ken, for that information on the detailed schedule for Jacksonville. It’s now two days late, but at least something will be forthcoming either late Sunday or early Monday, I guess.

Per AccuWeather, predicted highs for the four days of the meet are as follows:

    July 23 92
    July 24 92
    July 25 97*
    July 26 95

    * The 10,000 will be run on this day (a Saturday). Should be interesting with the heat.

Anybody know where to find detailed schedule for USATF/Jacksonville?

  9. Peter L. Taylor - July 11, 2015

Joe, you will be hurdling on July 24 and pole vaulting on July 25; that’s all I know. There is NO detailed schedule available at this time.

Look forward to seeing you at the meet. I hope you’re still living in Apopka.

The new marathon course is a joke. I was signed up but now won’t be running it. A 10K loop that tramples all over itself with about 15 turns, doubling back twice….X 4. The whole thing is contained in a park that’s barely a mile wide.

  11. Peter L. Taylor - July 11, 2015

Very interesting, Bill. I hate running on courses like that (never ran a race longer than 11 miles, but I know what you’re talking about). Thanks for getting us back on course (Lyon rather than Jacksonville), but there is great current interest in both meets (the webmaster — post no. 6 — allowed us to consider Jacksonville on this thread).

I once ran a 5-miler that consisted of doing the same 0.625-mile stretch eight consecutive times, but at least we did not get lost.

  12. Bill Newsham - July 11, 2015

I ran the 1/2 in Budapest which was multiple 3600m loops in a park but at least the loops were real loops. This one…like a shuttle run. The previous course covered quite a bit of Lyon. It makes me wonder whether they had security concerns. There’s two places on the course where you could stand and watch a marathoner go by 12 times. The way it is now they’re going to have trouble keeping track of people and their laps…and cheats.

  13. Milan Jamrich - July 11, 2015

I guess they changed the course for security reasons. Better safe than sorry. If you are staying in the center of the city here is info that might help:
D line runs from the center of the city starting at 5am A train every 7 minutes. It’s 15 minutes trip. 3 miles

  14. Quick Silver - July 11, 2015

Yes, they just had that beheading and fire bombing in SE Lyon.

Racewalkers are used to shuttle courses, but they need to concentrate unremittingly, so the laps just flow by.

  15. Anthony Treacher - July 12, 2015

Good. Well-planned schedule for me, M75 sprints and LJ. Seems WMA listened to some comments.

Lyon handbook for entrants posted. Includes tribute to Olympic vaulter Pierre Quinon, who committed suicide after Lyon won WMA worlds bid:
