Don Fields’ coach checks in on that 10.38 M40 100
Michael Chiles, an M35 sprinter who says he’s the coach of masters sprinter Don Fields, has responded to my request for details on the 10.38 100 attributed to Fields at a Tampa meet a few weeks back. Here’s what Chiles sent. My apologies for the SCREAMING TEXT. No apologies for running as is. Hope he coaches better than he spells.
DEAR MR STONE,
FIRST I WANT TO APOLIGIZE FOR NOT RESPONDING
SOONER , I HAVE HAD A PRETTY BUSY SCHEDULE. I WANTED
TO REPLY TO YOUR PREVIOUS EMAIL AND ANSWER YOUR
QUESTIONS.
I HAVE ONLY BEEN COACHING MR FIELDS 3 MONTHS, BUT WE
HAVE CHANGED SOME OF HIS BODY MECHANICS AND RUNNING
TECHNIQUES. MR FIELDS HAS BEEN RUNNING SINCE HE WAS A
YOUNGSTER BUT TOOK A BRIEF BREAK FROM RUNNING DURING
COLLEGE. HE EARNED HIS ENGINEERING DEGREE AT FAMU. HE
HAS BEEN HINDERED BY REOCCURING HAMSTRING AND ACHILLES
PROBLEMS THROUGH THE YEARS BUT HAS KEPT HIS PASSION
ALIVE FOR RUNNING AND COMPETING WHILE PURSUING HIS
CAREER WITH ORANGE CO GOVERNMENT. THE TECHNIQUES THAT
HE IS LEARNING INCLUDES: EUROPEAN STYLES.
GETTING TO THE BAYTAF SITUATION. THERE WAS NO WIND
READING THAT DAY. HE JUST COMPETED IN ALANTA THIS
WEEKEND UNDER BAD WEATHER AND WITH A HURT ACHILLES .
HIS TIME WAS AN 11.40 . I WOULD LIKE TO INTERJECT ON
THE RECENT TIMES POSTED(10.60’S AND 10.70’S). I AM NOT
TRYING TO BE HARSH OR STEP ON ANYONE’S TOES BUT I KNOW
THAT MR FIELDS IS READY ON ANY GIVEN DAY TO BE DRUG
TESTED. WOULD THE OTHER ATHELETES BE READY AS WELL? I
LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING EVERYONE AT THE NATIONALS.
THANK YOU,
COACH CHILES

I understand that this is your blog site , but you are also a representative of MASTERS TRACK AND FIELD. I don’t understand why this is turning out to be a three ring circus and a personal attack venue. I addressed your concerns and now you attack my character as a coach and as a person. The smart comments you made about my spelling were very uncalled for. I in no way ever attacked you or your character. I simply said in other words that Mr Fields did not have anything to hide here and I challeged if the other atheletes could say the same.
My history as a coach is not in question here, but I have 15 yrs in sports medicine, 8 yrs as a decathlete, trained by some of the top coaches, and coaching 7 yrs. I have increased some of my athletes’ times from 11.60 to 10.65. I don’t claim to be the best but I do have a great passion for Track and Field. My number one goal is to give back what I can to track .
I wanted to say that I was not trying to be smart by puting my last entry in all caps , it’s just easier to type all one way.
To the great master’s athletes that I respect:
Val,BillC.,Berry,Brown,D.McLoud,O.Matthews,M.Lovette
R.Thomas JR and A. Acoste , keep training hard and God bless. Have a great day
Actually, I looking for a good coach – at age 60, I’m hoping to become the fastest “Senior” in the world.
Please reply when able.
Much thanks.
