Eddy Hellebuyck, embodiment of chuztpah, loses doping ruling

Eddy Hellebuyck

Eddy Hellebuyck, who admitted EPO doping as a masters marathoner after he got the boot, made a valiant attempt to avoid further sanctions when USADA went after him again. Instead, he muddied his name further, and his results from October 2001 to January 2004 have been wiped from the books. Lance Armstrong dodged a bullet about the same time, avoiding federal charges, but Eddy had no such luck. See the 33-page ruling by the American Arbitration Association. The verdict was published Jan. 30, but major media haven’t noticed yet. But this is a milestone decision, which basically says: We’ll get you eventually — even years after the fact. This also is a victory for hard-nosed journalism, since Runner’s World writer John Brant got Eddy to fess up, which led to his latest penalties. Nice work, John. You make journos proud.

I confess I care neither for Mr. Hellebuyck, nor the condescending athletics legal bureaucrats he is amusing and financing here. I hopefully read this sort of thing only for any principles of justice incidentally expressed. I plock the raisins that could apply to me (and you actually) from the cake. Here I particularly liked deep in Para 6.21:

“…………….While the panel encourages the participation of all parties in the hearing process, particularly the party against whom the allegations are made …………….”

Nice thought. Somebody should tell the British, specifically the British Masters Athletics Federation (BMAF).

On a similar note, for all who supposedly believed, or supported certain Master’s T&F athletes of the past who failed a drug test, and used the “…well, Alberto Contador ate tainted meat and that’s why he failed his drug panel”, making the Tour de France Bicyclist, Alberto Contador some sort of PED martyr to show how these drug tests are flawed… as I wrote before, you were wrong…and wrong again. Early this week, Alberto Contador was finally stripped of his 2010 Tour de France title and suspended for two years as WADA President called Contador a “Cheat”. The reason why this decision took so long was by being slowed with numerous delays and mounds of evidence presented by both sides. In the CAS proceedings, the legal file alone ran to 4,000 pages. This is what happens when money and people with a sense of entitlement are involved in a case like this. So who will be the next round of Master’s T&F Men and Women PED users with the same lame excuses as in the past as to why they failed? Who knows… hopefully ZERO! But there are those that can’t help boosting their egos at any cost. Don’t say this site didn’t warn you…http://espn.go.com/olympics/cycling/story/_/id/7550222/alberto-contador-cheat

    Milton,

Thanks for continuing to voice your strong anti-doping stance! However, I do find it more than a little ironic that Dr. Life’s advertisment for Cenegenics is running on this website as I am posting this comment. Talk about “juiced-to-the-gills!”

I noticed that too Milton – ironic ad!

SO, do we as athletes and readers have a stronger knee jerk reaction when we hear of a big performance in athletics or cycling? If the answer is athletics, then it would seem that the public’s perception is that cycling is successful in cleaning their own house. They certainly don’t mind going after their top names and staying after them. I admire that.

Congratulations to my former clubmate, David Olds, who is now the official 2002 USA Masters Winter XC Champion! And to my current teammate, Danny Martinez, who is the 2002 Carlsbad 5000 Champion! We all knew you were the actual champs then. Great to see you finally get moved up! Good luck getting your prize money though. 😉

Also, congrats to Dennis Simonaitis, the best masters LDR runner of my generation, who had to play second fiddle to Eddy for far too many years. Your peers always knew you were the man. So sorry Eddy stole so many finish line tapes and $ from you.

Regarding Dr. Life’s advertisement for Cenegenics above, you should all know that I did NOT authorize the placing of Dr. Life’s head on that picture of my body.

Eddy, took too many 1st place race purses from Brian Pope back then as well.Since they statred testing there are a few fast folks who don’t seem to show up for the Championships I don’t think it’s coincedence either.
