Famer photos sought for online Masters T&F Museum
Aiming to reduce a beastly job to bite-sized pieces, M50 hurdler Andy Hecker has put out a call for photos (action and portraits) of members of the USATF Masters Hall of Fame. Andy writes: “When one thinks about putting together a pictorial and written history of our sport, where should one start? I started at the Masters Hall of Fame. What is there? Just a list of names. We should do better. Who are these people? What have they accomplished? What do they look like?” BTW, new USATF Masters T&F Chairman Gary Snyder has appointed Andy as head of a Masters History Committee (or somesuch.) So his project now has an official USATF stamp of approval.
Andy continues:
“I’m sure our in-house investigative journalist (Ken Stone) has links to articles and pictures of a few of these folks. Can any of the rest of you blog readers point me to pictures and articles about our legends? Are you one of these legends?

“My goal for (a) future historical Web site is to have an action picture, a face picture and an article listing the career accomplishments of these Hall of Famers, so their accomplishments and story is known further than just a name on a hidden list on the USATF website. And if more information is available, I’d like to provide links to other articles and pictures.
“Personally I have met a little over three dozen of the people on this list, I’ve watched many others from a distance, but I don’t know any of them well enough to write an article on any of them.
“I’m also still recruiting anybody who would like to help on the massive project of preparing this kind of material for display on the World Wide Web. Please contact me at info@trackinfo.org”
Me again:
Andy is right about my having a few shots of these folks. I’ll connect him to my content. Please do what you can as well. Many masters make light work. (And to all those Hall of Famers who read this blog, don’t be shy! Send Andy your best shots!)
One Response
I will add, I have written to all of the members who I have e-mail addresses for. To a one, they all say Norm Green has the information.
I have not yet received a reply from Norm, but I will speak in advance. I realize that the Hall of Fame is Norm’s love and his passion. I see the tons of effort he spends to assemble the lists of candidates each year. Asking Norm, alone, to write up the athletic life story of each of the members of the Hall of Fame is a monumental task to impose upon him. Effectively we are asking the man to write a book. Perhaps he will volunteer, but that is a lot to ask of him when he does so much already.
My idea to create a history of our sport and to recognize the key figures in its history was not meant to impose a ton of work on one person, be it Norm or myself. If the job is left to just one or two people, I think it will be doomed to failure.
This vision I have for an “on-line” museum is for all our participants, old and new, to find out about the history of our sport. But it will take a team effort and that is why I am asking for volunteers.
With no help, this is just another idea that will become what I can make of it from what I can Google in my free time. The Hall of Fame section might become something spectacular if Norm is willing to devote that much effort. Please, if you know of something already written or can write up something appropriate about one of our Hall of Fame members, please put out a little effort yourself. If I get responses from people making such an effort, I’ll build a page to check off who I have material about. Feel free to e-mail me at info (at sign) trackinfo.org
