For SoCal masters, season-ending meets include cool Point Loma

That's the Pacific Ocean out yonder in the blue distance.

SoCal masters are lucky. If they didn’t do as well as they liked, they have several late-season meets to try again for a yearly PR. One of my favorites is tied to the San Diego Senior Games, which is held in a great setting — ocean-overlooking Point Loma Nazarene University. Our M70 sprinter friend Doug Smith shares details of the Sept. 24 event: “I received the following email from my college roommate, who was also my track teammate, Jim Cerveny. He has been a track coach (high school and college) for approximately 40 years. … I know from experience that it is a very athlete friendly meet, and I encourage people to enter this meet.” Other meets are the Self-Transcendence Masters Games on Sunday, Sept. 18, at Long Beach State and the Club West Masters Meet at Moorpark College (a change from the traditional Santa Barbara) on Saturday, Oct. 23.

The Club West meet looked good when it was at the beginning of October, but the end of October will be too late in the year for me to try to run fast and too early in the base phase. Luckily, we have a great series of outdoor all comers meets to look forward to in January and February of 2012 up here in Northern California.

PLNU has a great tailwind, but so does SBCC. Planning a trip to California in the Fall so I’ll definitely hit one of these.

  4. Andrew Hecker - August 16, 2011

Club West will be at Moorpark College, not SBCC. Still has a good tailwind.

    Mr Hecker,
Do you know if the Moorepark College track has a curb…..just in case ….Sully

I’m looking to do Club West. It’s been a less than successful summer of racing for me, so the later date actually gives me time to do a full buildup. Also gives me a good reason not to train for a fall half marathon.

  7. Terry Parks - August 16, 2011

Jeff, I will be in the middle of my build up to my half marathon in December. I just pretty try to survive the half, whereas you actually race that long, but in any case, I will not be in my best imitation of a distance runner that I can muster by late October. It would be fun to run against quality middle distance guys again this year, but has been a long racing season. Best of luck to everyone who will race in September and October. I am currently enjoying my two weeks of active rest and thinking about 2012 and the Worlds in 2013. I had so much fun high jumping at the Pride meet that I ordered some high jumping shoes and I plan on doing the high jump in addition to the 400 and 800 next year.

There will be all-comer meets in December. Last year there were at least 5 high schools hosting the first and second Saturday’s in December. I would bet that at least two of these schools will have all comers in 2011. Plenty of time to improve on one’s age group ranking. December 10/17th 2011.

My post is still pending for some reason (perhaps the links), but I listed 5 high schools that hold all comer’s in December. Certainly a few will host again this year. Good for the rankings.

    Sully,
Moorpark has a curb. I hosted the SCAUSATF meet there in 2006. In fact, I have already discussed this issue with meet management. If they do remove the curb for football season, as so many places do, we will go there the day before the meet to check and replace it if necessary.

October is usually warm and dry in these parts. Fire season. I have put on a Cross Country race the weekend after this for 26 years so I’ve watched the weather during this time period closely. trackinfo.org/twilight.html

    Mr. Hecker,
Thanks for the information…. See you next month… …Awsome sunrise in the mountains this am. ….and it is cooling off here in Az. … only 108 today …got to love it!! Sully

I am sad to see the Club West meet move from the first weekend in October to the third weekend. My club has supported this meet for years now and we really enjoy it, but this year with the date being moved we will only have a handful of sprinters and throwers going because we will be at a Cross country meet-I think they will find that pushing the date back will hurt their attendance this year. I would encourage them to move the meet date back to the first weekend in October for next year, so the distance people can get one last meet in before we dive into the cross country season.
