Forde, Harvey burn quick miles at indoor nationals site
M45 Kevin Forde and W40 Alisa Harvey on Sunday ran some great miles at the Maryland venue of indoor nationals in March, according to these partial results of the all-comers meet held there. Kevin ran the 1600 in 4:37 and Alisa, at age 43, clocked the same distance in 4:55.8 (basically the same as my all-time PR of 4:56 run at age 20 indoors at Kansas.) Julie Hayden, who at 48 ran a nifty 4 and 8, reports: āAlisa battled it out in a big open menās field and had to ātake care of herself . . . as always a great icon for masters womenās track.ā
Julie continued:
The all-comers meets at Prince Georgeās are always well attended. The stands and area around the track was packed. The meet was an all-day affair. It is normal not to be able to park onsite for these meets.
Onsite parking is reserved for other users of the center (the paying public/ members) Fieldhouse users are redirected to parking in the adjacent FedEX Field lots. This is a fairly simple process and doesnāt usually require too much of a hike.
If you have a carload of people and equipment, they will let you unload first, but are pretty strict about reserving the closest parking for center rather than field house users. Jay (Wind) or Craig (Chasse) might be able to tell you if we will get priority parking for our meet.
Even if we do have to use the FedEX lots, there is tons of free, safe parking and the lots they direct you to are close by.
Those I spoke to liked the surface. It was certainly joint friendly. As it is so early season, I canāt gauge the speed of the track from my times. I was just happy not to be sinking down the home straight! Perhaps the sprinters can give you feedback on that?
Bruce (McBarnette) was jumping so he can give you his perspective. I noticed that they had two pits running simultaneously. The rules regarding spike checks and not leaving clothing lying around were certainly enforced.
I think the atmosphere inside the field house was a little improved. I wasnāt coughing on the way home, although I am a little croaky with a tickle this morning. Alisa could tell you more about that, as she usual suffers with allergies if she spends too much time there. It was pretty warm (probably due to the very large numbers present. Lots of warm-bodied parents in the stands) but I could breath OK when racing. Philly-based
Kevinās blog also shares other details of his race. Hereās what he wrote:
How I laid to rest my PGI ghosts!!!
It ended up being a 13-hour day for less than 5 mins work. That said, a road trip with 4 teammates and members of our āsister clubā Athena can never be frowned upon even if the end result wonāt make Wednesdayās year-ending Top Cats Top Ten list.
Off of two less than flattering performances here at PGI I was determined to put that right Sunday, I also wanted a chance to test out the new mondo surface b4 Marchās Indoor Nationals ergo hitting the road by 6.30 a.m. to get down to Landover by 9.15am to run the mileā¦..or as it ended up a 1,600m.
By the time we finally got around to the mile/1,600m it mustāve been gone 11am, Iād stretched and warmed up and waited patiently for the open/masters heats which when they eventually came around were split into two heats, sub 5, plus 5, I should be greatful they didnāt make the masters run separately but there were 20 athletes in the sub-5 heat which is one thing but the fact they wanted to run a 1,600m and not a mile meant there was always going to be a major clusterf ** k going into the first turn.
Sure enough the runner inside me almost went down as we hit the turn and could quite easily have turned the field into a house of cards. With hindsight, the next time Iām in a race w/ that many runners going into the first turn make sure Iām all the way on the outside of the starting line.
Jesus Iāve heard of running w/ the pack but this was like running w/the herd!!! It took me till the back straight of the third lap to get out of lane three by which time Iād opened w/ 34-second splits to clock a 68 second 400m.
By now the lead two runners were well clear as I moved clear into third, I was well and truly in no manās land as I now had to run against the clock. Today wouldāve been a good day to wear my new stopwatch that records splits as I donāt recall my 200m splits. I do recall 2.18 at 800m, third in 4.39.41 w/ a 1,500m split of 4.23.
Iāll aim to improve upon that Sunday at The Armory where I doubt Iāll have to race in a heat of 20. I canāt say my PGI experiences in the past 13 months have been stellar. Hereās hoping in 12 weeks time at Masters Nationals that changes.

Congratulations to Alisa Harvey (one of our superstars), the very colorful and dynamic Kevin Forde, and the versatile Julie Hayden.
Glad that people seem to like the new surface at Prince George’s (there was some concern that it might be slow).
Very unfortunate that they ran the 1600 rather than the 1609.344 (1 mile). As far as I know, there is no place in the world that the 1600 is a standard distance in open or masters competition.
ATHLETES were limited to 4 events – JJ WIND OF PVTC competed in at least 6
