Fresno and Cleveland-area indoor meets beckon to masters

Friends remind me that some great meets open to masters are coming up. One writes: “Many masters competitors don’t know about, arguably, the finest indoor track facility in the U.S. It’s part of the GaREAT Sports Complex in Geneva, Ohio (45 minutes east of Cleveland). Built in 2009, the facility has an 8-lane, 300m state-of-the-art indoor track with huge turns. It’s the perfect place to set PRs. On February 6, this facility will be host to the Lake Erie Association Open/Masters Indoor Championships. Entry forms can be found at overthehilltc.org.” A couple weeks later is the Run for the Dream meet in Fresno, California. Masters events including the 55-meter dash, 55 hurdles, 600 yards, mile and shot will be contested Feb. 27. (See the schedule.) Meanwhile, don’t overlook Andy Hecker’s national list of all-comers meets.

Indoor meets in California — where it never rains or snows — are a rarity.

Fresno: 10 laps to the mile? 200 meters? Banked?

  2. Sal - January 15, 2011

The track is only 140 yards long.

Looks like a 200 meter banked.

I have the Feb. 19th All Comers at U of Missouri. I’ll run the 5,000, mile, and 800. Flat, 200 meters. March 19th is indoors in Kansas City area where I’ll run the 800, mile, and 3,000. It’s a 200m, flat track. The KC meet is Open and Masters. Smartty

Last I had seen, Fresno had the old Sunkist track, which was 160 yards (11 laps to a mile). That sized track used to be common because it fit well into a standard basketball court sized arena, which I assume the Sav Mart Center is. They have since replaced that beat up old track with a brand new million dollar track funded by Fred and Marilyn Arnold (pole vaulters will remember the couple as the best pole vault officials around, working many of the big meets). I’ll assume the new track would be about the same approximate dimensions or a metric equivalent.

Looking at the markings on the picture, it sure does look like 200m.

I can’t tell how to even sign up. There’s info for HS, elite and college, but no contact info for Masters.

I think I found the answer:

“Helping bring the sport to the highest level will be the debut of a custom-designed 160-yard track for the Save Mart Center. A $900,000 donation by long-time track and field supporter Frank Arnold made the construction of the indoor track possible.”

With regard to the Fresno meet, I ran into an acquaintance of Bob Fraley, the meet director, on my run this morning and told him of the interest on this board, as well as my own, and the lack of any information for masters with regard to entries on the website. He is going to call Bob to see what he can find out. If and when he calls me, I will pass it on. Stay tuned.

OK, here is the information I got for masters applying for the Fresno meet. Contact Bob Fraley at the contacts listed on the website napva@hotmail.com or 559.908.2099. He will send you an application to fill out and return. You will pay your $25 fee when you arrive and check in.
