German lifts own WR on Day 2 at Eurovets
M75 weight thrower Richard Rzehak of Germany has the honor of setting the first world record at the 15th Eurovets championships taking place in Poland, reports Pete Mulholland in Poznan. The weight (thrown like an indoor hammer) is 16 pounds for his age group. Richard is no stranger to world-class masters competition. He won two golds (in the M50 hammer and javelin) as far back as the 1981 WAVA worlds.) Results are percolating online at a good clip.
Here’s the complete report from Pete:
“The first World Record of these championships came courtesy of Germany’s M75 Richard Rzehak whose 17.53m (57-6 1/4) weight throw improved on his 17.40m (57-1) mark set in San Sebastian.
The decathletes and heptathletes had some unfinished business to deal with amid the continued high temperatures with arguably the best of the bunch being George Werthner who amassed some 7736 to come close to Gary Miller’s 7771 points secured in 1989, the longest standing decathlon record in the books.
Caroline Marler continued her winning ways in the W55 pentathlon not only win by almost 1000 points but to also claim a European record. In fact Caroline’s 5912 points here, in what was only her second heptathlon, was not too far off the long standing world record of 6152 set by Netherlands’ Corrie Roovers in 1989.
Probably the most least affected by the heat was British firefighter Rob Earle who heaved the M45 weight (35 pounds) out to 17.00m (55-9 1/4) for a British record, four of his six throws exceeding the old mark of 15.72m (51-7).
There was confusion over the holding of the 100m heats as subsequent announcements stated they were off, then on, then off and finally on.
It could have proved awkward for the M50 brigade as some of them had left so the remaining competitors agreed to have the race cancelled. Lucky for a certain Dr. Steve Peters as he was back in his hotel room!
Still, the day ended with the majestic sight of Enrico Sarencini qualifying for the 100m semis as prepares to reverse the ‘whisker winning’ decision obtained by British powerhouse Tony Noel when these two last met in San Sebastian.
