Hartshorne mile fields Saturday suffer from cold and injuries

Elite women's field of 2010.

The best indoor miles fields of the season line up Saturday in Ithaca, New York, for the annual Hartshorne masters miles at Cornell University. Quality is high, but depth isn’t as good as previous years, organizers say. Tom Hartshorne, son of the event’s namesake, says: “Weather has been tough on us with a quick-moving snowstorm that raced through here this morning headed eastward. But injuries have been a much bigger issue in the elite fields, which are smaller than last year although we have some excellent races to look forward to. Last year was an amazing year. For instance, the first six W40 women running between 5:00 and 5:16 for the mile — truly a world championship kind of turnout! I’m sure we will have lots to talk about by early tomorrow afternoon.” Best of luck to all!

Here’s a story in the local paper:

The 44th annual Hartshorne Masters Mile will commence at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Cornell University’s Barton Hall.

The elite-level races, which are scheduled to begin around noon and include some of the top masters runners in the world, are the highlight of the day’s events.

Last season, Nicholas Berra, of Enola, Pa., won the elite masters men’s 40s race by eight-hundredths of a second. Other elite winners included Anselm Lebourne (M50) of Maplewood, N.J., Aeron Arlin-Genet (women’s 40s) of San Luis Obispo, Calif., and Cheryl Bellaire (W50) of St. David, Pa.

Masters running offers competition and racing to men and women over 40 years old. The race director is Tom Hartshorne, son of the event’s founder, James Hartshorne.

Saturday’s event features five regional races, whose fields consist mostly of local runners, followed by four elite races that feature the world’s best.

Tom Hartshorne has said the event “is the oldest masters mile race in the country, possibly the world.”

Latest update from weather.com: 4 degrees in Ithaca. Fortunately, we will be running inside.
About to have breakfast at the hotel. Have met Lance Elliott from Minnesota, who looks very runnerish.

Gary Rosenberg from New Jersey could surprise some people but seems unlikely to challenge the top guns in the 40s race: Nick Berra and Charlie Kern. Berra looks like he is full of run.

Julie Hayden and Cheryl Bellaire should do a nice job in 50s. Nolan Shaheed seems ready for a big effort in the 50s race, based on my conversation with him last night (Nolan is actually in M60 but runs with the 50s).

Thanks to Tom Hartshorne and his staff for providing this great masters’ showcase. Wish I could have been back this year. Looking forward to the reports on today’s race.

    Go Nick Berra !

Best wishes to the runners, and to Tom Hartshorne and the team! Tom, I still hope to participate next year, so keep that extra invite in your pocket for me.
