Heading to Linz? Some tips for drivers, photo-wanters
The German masters track site of Robert and Annette Koop offers some advice to folks driving to Linz, Austria, for the masters worlds. I’ve also gotten a note from British sprinter Lesley Richardson, asking me to pass the word that her photography services will again be available.
First Lesley:
“I am based in the Ibis Hotel but will spend far more hours in the Indoor Arena and out on the running and walk race courses. Could you put a quick note on your website so the USA athletes know I am there and if they want any particular pics they can ask me. I have also got an ad in the competitors program so they can get my details that way too.”
Here’s a better (posted 3/14) translation of Annette’s post:
Annettes Tipps to the passenger car journey Linz:
Here the current route by car to the Intersport Arena in Linz:
1. coming from Germany use the freeway Salzburg – Vienna (= “A 1”) – or the so called “goodfeeling route” from “A3-Nurenberg-Regensburg-Passau (GER) to Linz (=” A 8″ in Austria) and before Linz via the “A25” to “A 1” Salzburg – Vienna –
2. leave “A 1” at the “xit “Linz” and
3. drive the local freeway to Linz
4. pass the tunnel and leave the local freeway at the next exit to “Linz Zentrum”
5. turn left on the 3rd traffic light into the direction of “Intersport Arena”.
And oops you’re there.
Please note: Each automobile on Austria freeways needs a “golden tag” (“Autobahnvignette”), which has to be sticked on the windshield. And you have to buy this tag before you drive one meter on an Austrian freeway! Drivers with no tag have to pay an extra-fine of 120 EUROs (app 150 USD). Who manipulates, the double pays. If the driver is controlled by the police or custom and he’s not ready to pay at once, he will be charged and fined up to 4000 EUROs (app 5000 USD). A one-year-tag costs 72,60 EURO, a two-months-tag 22,00 EURO and, which is enough for the World championships, a 10-days-tag 7,30 EUROs. Rental cars of Austria normally have these tags. If you come from Germany ore other neighborstates and you don’t have such a tag, you can buy a tag near the border of Passau (GER) (I recommend the purchase at the 24h opened German rest stop “Donautal-West”) and before the border to Salzburg (AUT) (I recommend the purchase at the 24h opened “Jet”-gas station of Piding in Germany).
By the way fuel in Austria is (expensive for US-citizens but always) cheaper compared with Germany, so your disbursement for the tag will be compensated a little bit.

I looked at Lesley Richardson’s photos from San Sebastian. They are very good and very expensive. Hopefully the LOL in Linz will have a photographer taking pictures as well and will not do as was done in San Sebastian, printing out only one copy and once that was sold, tough luck. San Sebastian was much better than PR – where there were almost no photos at all. I fail to understand why the two recent WMA meets cannot do as was done in Australia -in the era of digital photography, make many shots available to be viewed and ordered. The individual who took photos at the meet in Hawaii was very good and his prices quite reasonable.
