American record HJ drama captured in Bloomington videos

M40 high leaper Matt McCubbins of South Bend, Indiana, writes: “This past weekend in Bloomington I was lucky enough to capture some historic high jump video, namely the record-shattering duel between Jim Barrineau and Kenny Drollinger in M55 High Jump. It’s not the highest caliber of footage, but the drama makes for an instant classic and I just had to share it. I have posted a few other Bloomington jump videos to my YouTube channel as well, but the one to watch is entitled: M55-59 High Jump: Barrineau vs. Drollinger at 2012 US Indoor Nationals [where both set two ARs]. My group’s video (M35-49) is nothing to write home about, but the other two are pretty entertaining: M50-54 High Jump at 2012 US Indoor Nationals: features Bruce McBarnette going at it with Tom Foley and Greg Vidos (yet again) Nieder vs. Witteveen at 2012 US Indoor Nationals: features Stacey Nieder doing battle with Solange Witteveen (2-time Olympian from Argentina) in the women’s high jump.” Great work, Matt! And congrats on M40 gold with your 1.74 5-8 1.2)!

    Very nice high jump competition!

Congratulation to both of them! Great competition. I knew that I would loose my record when these guys move to M55. I tried to improve my record in M60, but since I broke my toe 12 days ago, the cards were stacked against me. Still 164cm is not too bad.

I’d love for these two gentlemen to come and compete in our Grand Prix meet in Puerto Rico. Excellent Performances!!!!

Milan – congrats on your win! (and hobbled with a busted toe no less!). My apologies for not getting video of your group….I think your jump time overlapped with my group, but on different aprons. Dang it!! I was really looking forward to seeing another great straddler in action besides Kenny. I think my own style of jumping (low speed, strong free-limb action) might lend itself better to the Straddle than the Flop, but there is no one to teach me!! Anyway, well done!!

    Matt,
no problem. I felt sorry for you guys having to jump in Siberia:-).

    Matt,
Thanks so much for posting and it was great to meet you and your wife on Sunday. You have captured something that we will always cherish. We left in awe of so many great performances this past weekend – but this was a highlight (obviously)! “The Farmer vs The Olympian” quite a match! Kenny will be calling you when he gets out of the field or it rains – lol.

Hi Vickie! So glad you got my message and got to see the posting! We truly enjoyed sharing that moment with you. You’re right, it was very special indeed. Time to retire (and frame) Kenny’s old spikes and get that Jumping Farmer of yours a new pair – he sure earned ’em, 🙂

Hey, I was just looking at last year’s M55 indoor list and it shows Kenny had a 1.78 jump at the Indiana USATF Indoor Championships. Seems like they should have submitted that as the record. I’m a couple of centimeters shy.

Hi Jim, glad you found this write-up on your own – I neglected to get your email address at the meet, otherwise I would have sent you a link. Congrats again by the way! So I was at the meet you referenced in Indiana last March and jumped with Kenny. I vividly recall him clearing 1.73 (5’8) that day, mainly because I missed at 1.73 and was majorly ticked-off at myself AND that a straddler some 15 years my senior had just kicked my butt. However, I had thought that he missed at 1.78, so I wonder if the mark was incorrectly posted. Robert Thomas was running the meet and it seems like he would have been all over a record breaker like that. Even with 1.73 though, it would have tied Milan’s previous record so I’m not sure why it wasn’t at least submitted as such.

Well, he’s got it now anyway and Bruce McBarnette turns 55 in October, so we both better enjoy it while we can! Thanks for the camera work and editing.
