Hinton, Condon claim world, American mile records

John Hinton of North Carolina improved the M45 world indoor record in the mile today at the Hartshorne Masters Miles in Ithaca, New York. Frank Condon of California added an M65 American record in another race at the annual event at Cornell University. John, 45, clocked 4:20.18 to beat the listed world age-group record of 4:21.90 by fellow American Albin Swenson in 1993. Frank, 65, ran a 5:22.02 to nip the listed USATF age-group record of 5:23.05 by Sid Howard in 2004. Alisa Harvey, 42, of Virginia was the only women to run sub-5. Nolan Shaheed, 58, of California ran a 4:45.6, less than 3 seconds off his own M55 world record.

Her mark of 4:52.33 was more than 16 seconds ahead of runner-up Zofia Wieciorkowska of Connecticut. Alisa was 5 seconds short of her own W40 American mile record of 4:47.26, set a year ago in Fairfax, Virginia.
On the Age-Graded Tables, John’s mile is equivalent to an open (age 20-30) time of 3:56.76, and Frank’s mark is worth 4:07.65.

I wish I were a faster miler as I’d love to run in Barton Hall again. It was cool to see some familiar faces from *way* back — Don Farley, Caleb Rossiter, John Saylor, Patti Ford. Congrats to all!

  2. Tom Hartshorne - January 19, 2008

We had a great series of races and some very fast times. The timing was fully automatic w/Finishlynx automatic timing device. Thanks to all here in Ithaca who helped put on the event and thanks to all the athletes who made the Ulysses like trek from far away places Ithaca to compete. Excellent effort Frank on your American record and John on your World record!

  3. Liz Palmer - January 20, 2008

Congratulations to John! Frank, you Rock!!

  4. Ken Stone - January 20, 2008

My apologies to Tom and everyone for incorrectly copy-pasting the marks out of an Excel file Tom provided. Yes, they were all auto times to the hundredths of a second.
For some strange reason, when I copied the men’s times, the last digit of the marks didn’t “take.” I’ve now fixed all the times.

  5. Nolan Shaheed - January 21, 2008

Greatest master experience of my life.

  6. Mark Alexander - January 21, 2008

While the Hartshorne meet was underway on the east coast, two west-coast masters milers competed in open competition at the indoor meet at the University of Washington’s 307m track:
    M40 Chris Yorges 4:32.34
    M45 Kevin Paulk 4:38:98
