Horace Grant claims M60 world indoor record at 800 meters at LSU
Bill Collins writes Saturday from Baton Rouge: “Wanted to update you that Horace Grant broke the world record in the indoor 800 meters today. The meet was the Southwest regional championship at LSU. (See results here.) He ran 2:14.23, which breaks the American record of 2:14.75 by Sid Howard. The old world record of 2:14.42 was by Harold Morioka.” I had heard that Nolan Shaheed was set to run at LSU, but his name wasn’t in results. Nolan holds the listed M60 outdoor record at 2:08.56. Horace must have had fun — beating a guy almost half his age. Blake Bearden, 31, ran 2:23. Don’t feel bad, Blake. Horace is a legend. He holds the M55 AR in the 800 at 2:06.53, also set at LSU (back in 2009). Here’s Horace at a WR run three years ago:

Glad you got this out of the way early Horace, sky is the limit at National. My Congrats. Tony
Congrats Horace!
I see another fabulous mark…a new W60 American record by Eleanor Gipson in the high jump. She jumped 1.39m and the listed record is 1.38m. Congratulations Eleanor!
Horace, you “run young,” as they say; hard to believe you are in M60. Let me mark down your time in preparation for the big meet in Landover that starts on March 22 (our nationals).
Looking over the entry list, I see that you will have a lot of strong competition at nationals in the 800. Nolan Shaheed (the legend) and Ronville Gravesande look like the strongest, with perhaps Tony Plaster next.
Gravesande is from Guyana, I believe, and when he cranks it up is very hard to stop. Wish I could learn how to pronounce his last name.
Thanks all! I appreciate the congrats. I am blessed to have the continued encouragement from my teammates at Houston Elite and a coach like Bill, who can get me ready and advise me through my continued aches and pains allowing to compete.
HORACE – OUTSTANDING AND AWESOME RACE !!!!
Nice run Horace! Glad to see you healthy.
That is great. ….as an 800 meter guy..I know what it takes …and it takes a lot! Great
Horace – you ARE the MAN! Keep it going amigo.
Hey Horace, I’m proud to know that my name can be mention in the same sentence with The Great Earl Fee, Nolan Shaheed and you. Congrats on a great race. Hope to see you in person so I can give you a hug.
Hey Sid, it’s great runners and friends like you, my good friend Nolan, and the Great Earl Fee, along with the many other middle distance runners (list too long to mention here), that give me the inspiration to continue to chase the clock and in many cases chase the guys too :-). Records are nice, but just being blessed to just be able to continue this is my real prize….thanks again.
Congratulations to a great friend. It is always a pleasure to watch you run and talk with you. You are an inspiration. Your friendship means a lot to this old sprinter.
Horace! congratulations – its great to see you doing so well. I hope to see you later on this year my friend.
